Football: Frontiers battles hard to win through to quarter finals of cup

Frontiers Ladies 2 v 1 Southminster

ON SUNDAY, Frontiers Ladies hosted Southminster in the County Trophy looking to get one back on today’s opponents after losing on penalties to them last season.

A lot of the early play was in the midfield area with both teams creating a couple of chances but both keepers stood up to the challenge presented to them.

Frontiers would take the lead on the 38th minute when Charley Sheridan won the ball just outside her own box passed into Tayla Handscomb who chipped it over to Ella Fobbester.

Ella beat the back line and whipped a cross in which found Tayla Handscomb after carrying on her run and with her first touch sent the defender the wrong way she would fire the ball past the keeper into the net to make it 1-0.

It would stay that way till half time.

Second half started with the wind getting stronger and Frontiers would be kicking into it. Frontiers stood strong and were unlucky not to double the lead with chances from Lauren Yeats and Ella Fobbester.

With it being only 1-0 ,Southminster were not out of the game and that would prove when they found themselves on level terms with a ball that wasn’t cleared and fell to the feet of their forward and wind assisted would find the top left hand corner of the goal, 1-1.

It took to the 85th minute when Megan Caswells throw in was nodded on by Lauren Yeats to find Katie Williams who was taken down in the box and the referee awarded a penalty.

Tayla Handscomb stepped up and after replacing the ball a couple of time due to the wind kept her cool and passed the ball into the bottom corner give Frontiers the victory and progression into the quarter final.

Goalkeeper Jill Bartholomew added “The ladies battled very well today in horrendous second half conditions, but to stand strong and win the game 2-1 shows what character we have in this squad”

On Sunday, they head to the seaside to face Leigh Ramblers
