STUDENTS and staff from St Edmund’s College & Prep School, Ware, have raised nearly £13k to support Cancer Research UK. The money has been generated through a series of fundraising activities at the school’s annual ‘Charity Week’ event, which took place in March and included sponsored car washes and the popular ‘Soak the Teacher’ event.

Charity Week is a highlight in the St Edmund’s annual calendar. Last year the event raised nearly £10,000 for Caritas Bakhita House, a charity helping to support women who are victims of human trafficking. This year, the school has so far raised a whopping £12,762.45 for cancer research, a cause which is close to the hearts of many within the school community.

Every year, St Edmund’s Charity Week event, consists of fun fundraising activities for students and staff to enjoy including competitive football and hockey matches, sponsored car washes, a talent show, sponsored head shaves, and other student-led activities such as bake and pizza sales. The all-time favourite ‘Soak the Teacher’ event was also back this year and saw teachers drenched from head to toe – providing laughs a plenty for pupils.

Matthew Mostyn, Headteacher at St Edmund’s College, said: “Every year our staff and students club together to support a worthy cause and raise as much money as possible. This year was no exception. The enthusiasm and dedication shown by everyone was truly commendable. The funds raised during our Charity Week will help support further research in the ongoing battle against cancer. I am incredibly proud of everyone that took part.”

Further fundraising is planned later this year with St Edmund’s staff and pupils planning a concert and a colour run event to add to the total already raised from Charity Week.
