Chelmsford racing: preview and tips for Thursday’s seven-race card

THE latest all-weather meeting at Chelmsford Racecourse arrives on Thursday, with a competitive seven-race card under the lights in Essex.

Racing gets underway at 6.30 with a 7f maiden stakes in class six before rounding off at 9.00 with the 1m2f handicap.

The opener (6.30) sees a good field of 13 heading to the stalls to get the action underway and the pick of them is Miss Sunset Strip, a runner up at Chelmsford on her last two runs including over this 7f distance last time out earlier this month and is taken to go one better this time around.

Race two (7.00) is another decent field of 12 taking part in the class six handicap over seven furlongs. Trainer John Long sends So Chic to Chelsmford, having been campaigned heavily at Lingfield on the all-weather and showing very solid form before a sixth of nine last time out, struggling to scythe through heavy traffic. A better run should see So Chic get back to winning ways, while the chief threat is likely to come from No News, a winner at Kempton in January who backed that up with a second place finish at the same track.

The third race on the card (7.30) sees a few have live chances in the 12-runner class four handicap over seven furlongs. The best chance among the field is likely to be for Sandy Paradise, trained by Richard Hughes, who arrives in Essex in top form having finished second at Kempton when last seen. Mr Squires and Overnight Oats could be major players too, the former making their polytrack debut with top jockey Hollie Doyle on board.

Daaris is likely to be the one to beat in race four (8.00), a good second of five at this track in a handicap two weeks ago and is expected to go well once again, while race six (8.30) should go the way of previous course and distance winner Zachary, second at Chelmsford a fortnight ago.

Finally, the card comes to a close with a ten-runner class four handicap at 9.00 and the selection here is for three-time course and distance winner Cavalluccio, a good third of ten in a Kempton handicap last time out and is stepped back up in trip at Chelmsford to a distance he will relish.
