Following on from last year’s cup run which ended up in a final’s appearance at Twickenham, Harlow are producing the kind of form that have coaches, players and spectators dreaming yet again of a final’s appearance where they will hope to go one better.

Before that however they have first to negotiate the difficult journey to Reeds Weybridge for the semi-final.

Reeds surprisingly beat O. Alleynians; last year’s cup winners at Twickenham; in the last round and will fancy their chances to take another scalp.

This will not faze the Reds who are playing great 15 man rugby, with a dominant pack  supplying quick ball for their speedy backs. It is this very demanding, fast paced, lung bursting style of play combined with a well organised tight defence that opponents find very difficult to break down.

On Saturday against a well organised Thurrock side it was this style that delighted a large Latton Park crowd. Six tries and a 43-14 half time lead is testament to the hard work the team have put in during the season but if anything the coaches will be looking very carefully at the two tries that Thurrock scored through some defensive errors rather than the six tries Harlow scored. Small margins win big games and so this week’s mantra in training will be defence, defence, defence.

Two early scores in the second half sealed the away team’s fate but they pluckily kept carrying the fight to Harlow. Another four converted tries took the game way beyond Thurrock’s reach but once again some lack of concentration allowed them to score two converted tries of their own. Perhaps these second half lapses could be put down to a slackening off of the pace; probably to be expected in such a high scoring game,; rather than defensive errors but small margins win big games and Harlow will be very much aware and more alert this coming Saturday.
