More found in possession of knives in Harlow

Crime / Sat 11th May 2024 at 06:30am

ANOTHER 21 people were arrested on Thursday as officers continue to crack down on anti-social behaviour, dangerous driving and violent crime.

A spokesperson said: “More than 400 officer hours went into this police work, which included city centre patrols with our community partners, weapons sweeps, enforcing Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs), bike marking events, and static traffic stop sites to ensure drivers are following the rules of the road.

Among the arrests were a man breaching his court bail conditions in Southend, another man in Southend stopped and arrested on suspicion of drink driving, and a man wanted in connection with drugs offences in Chelmsford.

There were three arrests for outstanding shoplifters as well, with two arrested in the Epping Forest district and another in the Tendring district.

We stopped 207 vehicles as part of our roads policing, seizing 12 cars for driving without insurance and reported people for 40 traffic offence reports.

While sweeping public spaces we also found four weapons that have now been seized and will be destroyed. In Harlow, a 17-year-old has been charged with possession of a bladed article and two more people were found in possession of knives when they were stopped and searched”.

Superintendent Phil Stinger said: “This day of action highlights the importance of our knife arches at detecting and deterring crime.

“We will use all the powers and tools at our disposal to take knives off our streets and make Essex a safer place for everyone.”

Puzzled: one 17 yesr old charged for possession of a bladed weapon yet two people found with knives weren't? Shoplifters described as "outstanding" , sounds like praise, might "prolific" be more appropriate? An excellent effort by the police it's a great shame that austerity, cutting police numbers or the thinking by politicians is that one day's action, or taking policing out of the community, off the local beat and into cars was ever going to be effective. Even the use of Community Support Officers was cut. Can't say I've ever seen a policeman on the beat in the last 40 years. Whilst there's poverty, a lack of youth clubs and a poor education system crime is more likely to flourish and the Tories will gradually create a police state taking away civil rights. Blair saud it being "tough on the causes of crime " is the answer

Nostradamus, i think they used "outstanding" as in there were outstanding warrants for their arrest, not that they were outstanding shoplifters. If that was the case no one would know, and they wouldn’t have been caught.

So it was an Essex wide search, not as the headline suggests !

Of course it is legal to carry a none locking knife of less than three inches blade, with no reason necessary. Be careful with multi tools though as they can fall outside the law. I carry a legal knife everywhere it is a useful tool.

Well done to the police we need less crime and safer driving , the insurance companies are making it difficult for people to afford car insurance because they are greedy

Nostradamus, you know as well as the rest of us that the words used by YH are not gramatically correct and if they were used by the Police it would have meant exactly what John C has stated. YH again with the attention grabbing headline that really wasnt all about Harlow but Essex County. Can we EVER have a comment that doesn't lay the blame at the fault of the government and should instead lay blame at the Parents feet!

Police need backing, support intelligence and general help all round. They have a crazy job, they deal with thousands of people with mental health issues. Please dont jump on the pathetic band waggon off slatting our police service.. Blame this shit government and its cuts

Peter, hardly correct to blame someone carrying a blade on the government, I would firstly blame the individual concerned then look at the parents as they obviously didn't raise them properly.

Years ago a great many people carried knives. The Scouts encouraged the boys in their troops to carry a sheath knife on their belt at all times as they might come in useful. My father gave me my first knife when I was around 8 or 10 years old. So there was a point when MORE people were carrying knives, and FAR, FAR fewer people were being stabbed. I wonder what has changed over the past 30-40 years.
