Chelmsford Racecourse: preview and tips for Thursday’s eight-race all-weather card

Sport / Wed 22nd May 2024 at 03:34pm

THE latest all-weather racing meeting at Chelmsford is on the horizon, with an eight-race card on off for punters heading to Essex on Thursday evening.

Racing gets underway at 5.10 with an apprentice handicap in class six and the bumper card rounds off at 8.52 as nine runners will tackle the 1m2f handicap.

The opener (5.10) is a couple of trips around the track for the nine runners in the apprentice handicap over the two-mile distance. Pfingstberg shaped well after an absence when third at Chelmsford 21 days ago and is stepping up in trip seemingly ready to improve for that last run. The chief threat can come from Wannabe Brave, who scored readily in a Wolverhampton handicap recently and should be right amongst it at Chelmsford.

Race two (5.40) sees Sunny Street set the standard in the 16-runner novice stakes on previous form but needs to bounce back from a disappointing 10th of 12 at Haydock last time out, so preference here could be for Groovy Baby, second of five in a minor contest at this track on debut six months ago, now returning with a hood on for the first time.

The third race of the evening meeting at Chelmsford is the restricted novice stakes over five furlongs (6.17) and Fidelius for trainer Robert Cowell is very much the one to beat after a good third in a Lingfield handicap last time out. Race four (6.47) sees four-time course and distance winner Dark Side Prince hold very strong claims in the nine-runner class five handicap over the 5f sprint trip, and in the fifth race of the evening (7.17) should go the way of All In The Hips, who landed jockey Alexandra McDonnell a first career winner and the duo team up again at Chelmsford.

Ten runners will head to the stalls for the division one handicap in class six at 7.47, the sixth race on the Chelmsford card, and preference here is for Amaysmont, who scored at Chelmsford last time out and can benefit from a good draw once again. Ballybaymoonshiner can run the Kevin Frost-trained Amaysmont close, another course and distance winner who has won twice from four runs this season.

The penultimate contest on the Chelmsford card is over the same distance and class as race six but this time in division two (8.22) and Magic Gem looks the one to beat on polytrack debut having finished second of 12 in a Newcastle handicap last time out.

Finally, the card comes to a close with the 1m2f handicap (8.52) with nine runners set to head to post. Photon is still a maiden but is taken to shed that tag here and get the first win, arriving off a second at Wolverhampton 54 days ago when only just headed on the line.
