For centuries, board games have been a favourite pastime activity for many people as they combine elements of entertainment, social interaction, and strategy. Among many varieties of board games today, mahjong differentiates itself from the others since it has a long history in Chinese gaming culture.

This game has undergone a long journey throughout the years, showing its adaptability. Although the precise origins of mahjong are somewhat uncertain, historical reports indicate that the game emerged during the Qing Dynasty around 19th century China.

During that time, mahjong’s popularity grew outside of the upper-class circle and became a popular activity for people during social gatherings or festivals.

Mahjong is similar to the Western card game rummy, which involves strategy, skill, and luck. However, it is played using a set of 144 tiles instead of cards. This game involves players forming winning hands using the tiles drawn or claimed from other players. Each player must arrange the right tiles together to build the winning combination, which requires calculated decision-making.

During the beginning of the 20th century, mahjong’s popularity grew outside China, leading to the creation of new game rules and the emergence of clubs and collectors in Shanghai and Japan. In the 1920s, mahjong expanded to Western countries like America and England. The official American rules were created shortly after.

In the modern era, mahjong showed its adaptability to technological advancements. One example is the automatic mahjong table, which is a modern take on the classic game.

Unlike traditional mahjong, which requires manual tile arrangement and shuffling, automatic mahjong can revolutionise the gameplay using advanced features like integrated scoring systems and automated tile shuffling mechanisms.

As the name implies, the shuffling mechanism is used to shuffle and arrange the tiles by pressing a button. The tiles are shuffled quietly inside the shuffling chamber. As a result, players can spend more time playing the game and less time shuffling the tiles manually.

Meanwhile, the table also features electronic displays beside the integrated scoring system. The features allow players to view their current scores and other relevant information.

The automatic mahjong table is becoming more popular for mahjong enthusiasts. This is mainly because the built-in features enhance the overall gaming experience and offer convenience.

Mahjong in gambling activities

Nowadays, mahjong can be played anywhere, such as at home, at social gatherings, and in casinos. When gambling, betting on mahjong is slightly different than other casino games.

This is because players place their bets to guess the outcome of the whole mahjong game instead of betting on each hand, like baccarat, poker, or blackjack. The stakes usually range from small amounts of money to large sums on formal occasions.

Mahjong gambling is often found in many casinos, especially those that have large Asian customers. Players will take turns drawing or discarding the tiles to create winning combinations.

After each round, the scores are calculated to determine the winners and losers. However, the rules and regulations of mahjong gambling can vary in many places since different regions have their customs and conventions.

Other than land-based casinos, the popularity of mahjong has extended to online gaming. Players can choose various game versions on the internet, including a solitaire-based game or a slot machine.

When playing slot mahjong, the reels display a new group of tiles in each spin. Meanwhile, solitaire mahjong is a Western version of the game that involves tile matching and removal.

Online mahjong games serve as a bridge for players worldwide, enabling them to play the game from anywhere. The games also introduced Chinese cultural elements to the players so they could understand the country’s origins and traditions.

Players can use different payment methods according to their preferences when playing at physical or online casinos. These include fiat money, bank transfers, credit or debit cards, e-wallets (PayPal, Venmo, Skrill), and cryptocurrencies.

Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tether, and others are growing in popularity in casinos. This method offers many benefits, such as faster transactions, improved security, anonymity, accessibility, and lower transaction fees.
