Cricket: Alfie Jessey hits century as Harlow beat Sawbridgeworth

Cricket / Mon 10th Jun 2024 at 08:39am

THE bare figures do not even begin to tell the tale of a highly entertaining encounter to kick off our 250 Celebration series of games at Marigolds on Sunday.

Skipper Fisk won the toss and did not hesitate in batting first on a very flat looking wicket. Jonny Allen went off like a scalded cat as Harlow raced along at better than a run a ball.

Jonny’s demise to one that kept lower than a low thing on a low day, slowed our progress a touch, but Billy Clarke and Alfie Jessey were rotating well and hitting the bad balls very hard. Billy went run out thanks to not sliding his bat in, a learning moment for sure, for a very well constructed 36.

Ollie Allen and the returning Max Baulcomb both fell cheaply as the innings looked in danger of petering out. Skipper Fisk, however, had other ideas with some smart running and solid boshing the score crept up and up. All the while Alfie was playing an innings that belied his years.

As we got close to the 40 over mark Alfie was closing in on  a fantastic hundred. Matt, did everything he could to make sure Alfie had the strike and in the final over the roof came off the Pavilion as they scampered a single to give Alfie a magnificent century. I’m not sure there was a dry eye in the house. A fantastic achievement from one so young !

236-4 was a very decent total against a strong looking Sawbo XI. After a magnificent Slate Tea, competition resumed, with Jack Fuller and Tyler Dobson tasked with making the breakthrough. Tyler duly obliged in the 6th with a steepling catch taken by Alfie at cover….with the gloves on ! Jack was very unlucky not to take a wicket, with two yorkers scraping the stumps on their way through. At 49-3 (Tyler all 3) Harlow were looking good.

However, Lemon and Ashmen had other ideas. A 147 run partnership got Sawbo into a winning position. Another returnee Jake Messenger, was also unlucky not to take a wicket or two. It was left to skipper Fisk, coming on 4th change, who dealt a hammer blow to Sawbo chances with two wickets in 2 balls removing the dangerous Ashmen in the process.

That set the stage for that lad Jessey to get in on the action once again with two stunning outfield catches to remove Dale and Mann, much to the joy of the assembled masses. (Alfie and Ronnie swapped gloves at drinks.)

The last over arrived with Sawbo needing 13. Who was bowling…yep that lad Jessey. Despite being smacked for six by Lemon who reached a very well deserved 100 a ball later, he held his nerve to trap Paktsun LBW off the last delivery giving Harlow victory by 2 runs !

A sensational afternoon with cricket very much the winner and an afternoon the young Alfie will not forget in a hurry.

Sawbridgeworth were tremendous and the entire afternoon was a joy to be involved with.
