THAMES Valley Athletic Centre, was the venue for the SEAA Southern Counties Senior & Under 20 Championships on Sunday 9 June. Whilst this event was primarily a senior event a number of age group events were included that will not feature at the main age group championships later this summer. One of these events was 3000m for Under 15 boys and girls. Harlow Athletic Club had two entrants, George Watkins in the aforementioned U15 3000m, and Rhiana Drew in the Under 20 Women’s hammer.

Both athletes were undoubtedly buoyed by success on the Saturday at the Hertfordshire and Essex Schools’ Championships respectively. Watkins won the U15 Boy’s 1500m at Chelmsford, whilst Drew won the Senior Girl’s Hammer event at Hemel Hempstead.

George Watkins competed against seven other boys from across the southern region and was a comfortable winner in the end as he crossed the line fully eleven seconds ahead of Aldershot athlete, David Orbell. His winning time of 9.17.62 minutes was his season’s best.

Rhianna Drew threw against eight other athletes. Going into the competition, Drew was up against stiff opposition that included those hopeful of age group international selection. She finished the competition fifth overall and threw a new PB of 35.84m in the process. Willow Bedding, of Huntingdonshire AC, won the competition with a best throw of 47.86m.
