Harlow man Gavin Plumb sentenced to life in prison over Holly Willoughby plot

Crime / Fri 12th Jul 2024 at 12:34pm

THE streets of Essex are safer today for women and girls after a dangerous sexual predator, who plotted to kidnap, rape and murder a television presenter, was handed a life-sentence and ordered to serve a minimum of 16 years in prison.

Following a robust investigation by Essex Police’s Major Crime Team, which led to the successful conviction of 37-year-old Gavin Plumb, of Pottters Field, Harlow, was today sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court.

During a trial at Chelmsford Crown Court, jurors were told Plumb had been plotting an attack on Holly Willoughby since 2021.

Plumb developed an obsession with Ms Willoughby over a number of years. He had scoured social media and material online, amassing thousands of images of the star and gaining detailed knowledge of her activity and movements.

But Plumb – who has previous convictions for kidnap and attempted kidnap of women – had a sinister and violent streak and began plotting to abduct, attack and murder the television presenter.

He joined various online forums, including one called “Abduct Lovers”, and began a series of discussions dating back to 2021 where he discussed his plan to kidnap the presenter from her family home.

During online discussions, Plumb discussed how he would restrain his victim and even purchased equipment to assist him including metal cable ties, ropes and chloroform.

Jurors were shown evidence of conversations between Plumb and a man called “Marc”, where they discussed graphic detail about sexual and violent offences they plotted to carry out against the victim.

But Plumb’s depraved plans were thwarted thanks to the work of an American undercover police officer. In October 2023, Plumb continued planning his attack in online forums but did not realise that another man he was seeking to draw into the plot, was in fact an American undercover police officer.

However, thanks to the American police officer and the prompt actions of Essex Police detectives, Plumb was arrested in October 2023 before he could carry out his crimes against his intended victims.

The officer, engaged in conversation with Plumb online and spotting the immediate danger to Holly Willoughby, duly contacted the FBI and British police. Plumb was arrested by Essex Police at his home in Potters Field, Harlow, on 4 October 2023.

Following a trial at Chelmsford Crown Court, Plumb was convicted of soliciting the murder of Holly Willoughby, encouraging or assisting the commission of her kidnap and encouraging or assisting the commission of her rape.

Handing down sentence to Plumb, Judge Mr Justice Murray praised Ms Willoughby’s “considerable courage” and said he “has no doubt that this was all considerably more than a fantasy” for Plumb.

He also pointed to the Plumb’s previously violent and sexually motivated convictions, the purchase of items in order to commit offences and concerted research into the personal life of Ms Willoughby.

Speaking directly to Plumb, the judge said it was clear from the evidence that he posed a significant risk to women and passed a discretionary life sentence, with a minimum of 16 years to be spent in prison before being eligible for release from custody.

If and when Plumb is released, he will be subject to licence conditions for the whole of his life.

Essex Police’s Senior investigating officer Det Chief Insp Greg Wood said: “Today Gavin Plumb starts a life sentence, with a minimum of 16 years behind bars, and the streets of Essex are safer for woman and girls as a result.

“He is a dangerous individual with a history of kidnapping, attempting to kidnap and plotting to kidnap women and girls. In this case he went further and intended to rape and murder his victim.

“He tried to claim throughout the trial that he was an obsessive fan and a fantasist – that is simply not true. He planned this attack on Ms Willoughby over a two-year period, scoping her movements, seeking to elicit help from others to carry out his wicked plan, buying chloroform and other items to incapacitate, restrain and inflict violence upon her.

“He is no fantasist – he’s a calculated, violent, sexual predator who has spent his adult life inflicting or plotting to inflict harm on women.

“Today I pay tribute to Ms Willoughby and the other women who have been victims of Plumb. The courage and bravery of all of them to support our investigations and – now and previously – have helped us to protect other women and girls. Thank you to all of them.

“This case has brought violence against women and girls and misogyny to the fore. It has demonstrated that all of us, whoever we are and whatever we do, have much to do to stamp out this scourge on our society.

“It cannot be right that men like Gavin Plumb are able to join online forums where they vent their hatred towards women and girls and plot to harm them.

“In this case our American colleague ensured we were able to bring Plumb to justice, but we need everyone to stand up to call out misogyny and to report those committing or intent on committing violence towards women and girls.”

Have to wonder if prison is the right place for him...Secure hospital unit first to be assessed. As this guy has issues.

Good result and sends a clear message to anyone else thinking of behaving the same way. His size prevented him from physically carrying out an attack, but to have those sick thoughts in your brain and vocalising them, well you deserve to be banged up. Upside, there is a flat available now for anyone on the waiting list.

So let’s get this straight. He didn’t rape or touch anyone but yet he got more prison time than actually rapists? Erm maybe he needs mental help rather than being punished for telling someone his weird sexual fantasies…

You guys saying he needs help instead of punishment are crazy. Listen and read what he planned to do and what he bought to even commit the act. The guy deserves the death penalty, he's done similar things before. A tall tree and a rope is all that is needed for this rodent. I seriously cannot believe some of you are saying he should get help instead and be assessed like wtf no.

So life in prison? Not if the new "release early" things come to fruition to sort out overcrowding !! Prison really needs to be changed so that it again becomes a real deterrent. No more little luxuries and "human rights" for serious offenders. Solitary and hard labour is the way.

JimBob - I think his previous crimes were taken into consideration too. For those crimes he received a suspended sentence, when he should have been jailed. Tying up a woman, threatening two others with a fake firearm and a rope. Clearly, he is a danger to women. A long sentence is justified, he deserves it.

So life usually means 10 years these days. This means with labours plans to release Prisoners after 40% of their sentence he will be out in 4 years. Not much of a deterrent really is it.

Guy, he has to the 16 years before parole can be considered. As he, on this occasion, did not actually carry out the crime, it isn't a bad sentence. Wish he had more tho! Jusge also said be on licence for the rest of his days, so if he does anything like this again, back in jail he goes. I don't think he should be in hospital at all, but he does need to understand this is grossly disgusting, so a bit of mental help may be useful as to not reoffend. Rehab does help cut reoffenders, that has been proven, but who knows with this sadist?

Even he had got less , only prisoners who had committed minor crimes would have got out early. His was not minor so he would have to do his full sentence. Long drop short rope probably would have been better

State of the prison system and probation / payroll systems the mental help this guy needs is unlikely to be delivered. No comment on the 15 year sentence but it's odd such online groups exist, American police have long been suspected of entrapment and had the warning bells sounded, been heeded and acted upon when he first offended then he may have had better life options, wouldn't be in this predicament now and the public purse wouldn't be paying for at least 15 years in prison. There are countries who have found other more effective ways of tackling crime and rehabilitation where they are closing prisons the uk like most of the prison estate is stuck in the Victorian era.

Police, including in the USA are careful with entrapment so they don't do it in a way that would lead to a criminal getting off in the courts, entrapment means to coerce someone into doing something criminal rather than present an opportunity leaving the criminal to make up their own mind freely. Long time ago I worked in a company who touched on this on occasion. I don't think that coercion is the case here with Plumb and if so, it would've been used as a defence in our courts. Also, with the USA copper, it must've been a balancing act to wait until he had enough evidence that Plumb was serious and that this wasn't just a sick fantasy otherwise I suspect nothing would've happened to Plumb legally or get mental help had he spoken up earlier. Plumb probably would've just moved onto a different part of the dark web and perhaps find someone to aid him in his criminal acts after all.

Gabby, give it a rest, I worked in an industry that dealt with it, thanks very much. Also, show me where I knew anyone in Palestine, Ukraine or ever written about it please? Because I have never said such a thing, your post is indeed utter nonsense and a lie.

It is great news that someone as been put inside for a long time before doing the crime his intention was all there to see he deserves everything he get . So pleased that Holly Willoughby did not get hurt in this but mentally she must of suffered. Now its all over for her I do hope that she can move on and get back to tv work

Trace . The problem I found with your posts was , if someone disagreed with you which they are entitled to do, you would reply with rude and nasty quips and the end of your posts.

So let me get this straight , if I think about a terrible crime and communicate my thoughts about said crime then I am guilty of plotting the crime therefore a life sentence is appropriate?, The guy in this case is undoubtedly a sad excuse for a man and may have dark intentions but until he commits the actual crime how is he guilty?.

How many times have people said I want to murder and torture another individual but then after they have calmed down they realised it was just anger and not a true intention. Should those people be sentenced to life as well?.
