Three arrests made following use of live facial recognition cameras in Harlow Town Centre

THREE people have been arrested following the use of the forces Live Facial Recognition (LFR) cameras in Harlow this weekend.
One suspect was arrested on suspicion of harassment, and had been wanted by police since May.

Another was wanted on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm, and a third person was wanted on suspicion of common assault.
Another person was positively identified in connection with a common assault and agreed to attend a police station for interview voluntarily.
The previous deployments saw the cameras on Southend seafront and High Street on 25 August and 26 August, over the bank holiday weekend. There were five positive alerts and two people were arrested – one for harassment and one for sexual assault.

During the first deployment at the Clacton Airshow (22 and 23 August) there were five positive alerts leading to three arrests.
We use the technology to find people wanted for serious offences, to help enforce orders against those whose faces are put on a ‘watch list’ and to protect those who are vulnerable and at risk of harm.

If your face is not on the watch list, the technology deletes your image in a fraction of a second. It’s not retained and it’s not stored on a database.
The technology is so clever, it can recognise someone’s face even if it is partially covered.
Detective Superintendent Gary Biddle said:
“This was another successful deployment where we’ve been able to bring suspects into custody and progress our investigations.
“We were particularly happy to show members of the public how the technology works and answer the questions they had, and dozens of people wanted to know more when we visited Harlow on Saturday.
“We’ve now had eight arrests form our three deployments. We’ve seen Live Facial Recognition technology can be an effective tool in finding people we want to speak to.
“This technology is an investment in our communities.
“It’s an effective way of finding people we want to speak to and keeping the public safe.
“This technology can be a more efficient use of resources than having officers undertaking various time-consuming enquiries to locate them.
“It means those officers are able to do other work to protect and help the public, and further investigations.
“Cutting edge technology is playing an important role in protecting the public, responding to and investigating crimes, and getting justice for victims.
“Criminals cannot think that they can walk around our communities without being caught.”
Brilliant…, that’s a successful day. All the people moaning about have extremely quiet.
James M - I complained about it, because like everything it is initially useful and not used for a wider control. Then comes mission creep and before you know it we are like china with social credit etc.
They would have done that years ago.. stop being so pathetic, it’s to stop crime! People moan about the crime in Harlow so the police do something and make arrests and you moan they use CCTV! You are already being tracked you probably have a smart phone and internet access, a bank account etc etc …. Stop being so foolish
I was involved in a EU wide project on this 10 years ago. The plan was to reduce wait times at passport control. Basically facial recognition would be used as you enter the building, and checks would be done before you got on the plane. The plan was shelved due to civil liberty issues. This tech can recognise you even if you have a beard wear glasses or a hat or hoodie. There was talk of a long term plan to roll it out in all public buildings. Like I said the plans were shelved due to the response from civil liberty groups. I suspect there is now a new plan in place and there should be a wider discussion of the pros and cons of this rather than the mission creep we are most likely to see. Remember when the first speed cameras came out and compare to where we are now
If it catches the bad guys then let's have more cameras
Guy, the company I worked for in Harlow was involved in a similar project
What next failure to renew your tv licence put the wrong item in your rubbish bin , remember films like emery of state, minority report big brother is always watching you, drive your car and ANPR can tell were you been and don’t forget have your phone on and they can see where you been….
Real criminals know not to come town center, this is just a show for the people that complain about the town centre nothing more, coke dealers still doing what they been doing for years. As long as people are using the drug dealers are working no camera gonna stop them and violence will always happen
Try to help the friends and family that are using instead of trying to stop drug dealers. We been going in circles arresting and releasing them or you arrest one but then 2 pop up instead
Good grief George Orwell was a head of his time
Mirror sunglasses and a medical mask might help
Great result, catching those who are hidden in plain sight, perhaps it should be used more often in and around Harlow, especially in the evenings. Next time use it unannounced, it may be even more effective catching the numerous wanted suspects who are walking around the town with impunity.
