Athletics / Fri 20th Sep 2024 at 08:28am

ON Saturday, 14th September, nine members of the Harlow Running & Tri Club participated in the Swim Serpentine event held at Hyde Park, London. This open-water swim, set around the iconic Serpentine, offered various distances for participants to tackle: half a mile, one mile, two miles, or the ultimate challenge, a six-mile swim known as the “Super Six.” With one lap around the Serpentine measuring one mile, swimmers faced the added challenge of cold water temperatures, hovering around 16°C, making it a chilly experience

Ella Wager was the only club member courageous enough to take on the Super Six. She completed the demanding six-mile swim in an impressive time of 3 hours, 18 minutes, and 7 seconds, earning the distinction of finishing as the 5th placed female and securing 2nd place in her age group. A truly remarkable achievement!

The rest of the Harlow team took on the two-mile swim, posting some strong results:

Ben Fowler: 57:12
Jamie Olsen Ferreira: 1:02:03
Michelle Hyde: 1:03:38
Jon Waight: 1:07:37
Gail Nicolls: 1:12:01
TJ Rovvlands: 1:12:55
Dom Emery: 1:27:50
Steve Warren: 1:37:26
Vicky Steadman: 1:51:52

The Swim Serpentine event is part of the prestigious “London Classics” challenge, a remarkable achievement that comes with an impressive medal awarded to those who complete all three selected endurance events: the London Marathon, the RideLondon 100-mile cycle, and the Swim Serpentine 2-mile swim. This year, four Harlow Running & Tri Club members completed their London Classics journey by finishing the 2-mile swim.

Congratulations to Gail Nicolls, Dom Emery, Vicky Steadman, and Michelle Hyde who, after completing all three events, proudly collected their well-deserved London Classics medals, a testament to their dedication and endurance across multiple disciplines!
