Twelve years on: Remembering the Shakoor family, killed in a Barn Mead house fire

Crime / Tue 15th Oct 2024 at 12:00pm

IT IS now twelve years since six members of the Shakoor family lost their life following a fire in their Barn Mead home.

Shortly before 2am on Monday, 15 October 2012, emergency services were called to a large fire at a home in Barn Mead, Harlow.

Dr Abdul Shakoor lost his wife, Dr Sabah Usmani and their children daughters Hira, 12 and Maheen, 3 and their sons Sohaib, 11 Muneeb, 9 and Rayyan, 6.

A murder investigation was launched by Essex Police, turning into one of our largest enquiries under the name Operation Shakespeare. Seven people were arrested following initial enquiries but later released without further action.

There is no particular appeal this year, but all the stories we have published over the last eleven years can be seen below.

We just wanted the community to know that we have not forgotten them.

A dreadful crime that Essex Police needs to up its game to solve. The burial of the innocent victims at Parndon Wood was heartbreaking. This crime must be solved and Editor Michael Casey deserves credit for yet another reminder.

A tragedy which has left so much grief in its wake - an unimaginably criminal act and I hope that one day the person(s) responsible come forward. Thank you for YourHarlow for affirming that Harlow hasn’t forgotten and that heinous crimes won’t dissolve our community spirit and love for one another.

How that poor man carried on, must have been so difficult. Hope time heals him even in the slightest

Dreadful, just dreadful. But isn’t there a precedent?, who remembers the Sherwood House, Bush Fair fire?. As far as I am aware, nobody has ever been charged/convicted of that outrage.
