Harlow MP sends message to farmers angry over chancellor’s budget

Chris Vince / Fri 1st Nov 2024 at 09:16am

WITH many villages now part of the constituency of Harlow, our new MP has spent some time out in Hatfield Broad Oak, Nazeing and other areas speaking to farmers.

However, it look like farmers are deeply underwhelmed by the chancellor of the exchequer, Rachel Reeves’ budget.

So we asked Chris Vince, if he had a message for them.

Mr Vince said: “I have already had the immense privilege of seeing the invaluable work farmers do in the constituency of Harlow and across the UK.

Since being elected I have sat down and listened to the issues the farming industry are facing and have been proactive in raising issues of rural crime and successfully securing commitment from the government on a new rural crime task force.

For too long, we had a government that played only lip service to our farming community. I promise to always be upfront and honest with the farming community as we ensure food security for the whole of the UK.

“My door is always open for discussion and I encourage those in the farming industry to get in touch.”

His open door policy isn't going to stop farmers from having sell the farms to cover the huge inheritance tax demands further affecting our food supply chain as we become more reliant on imports.

Labour's Inheritance Tax rules are a complete anathema to the sustainability of our domestic food production. They are so ignorant of the farming and agricultural sector. They say they represent 'working people'.... who works harder than our farming communities? The lunatics are running the asylum and Chris Vince is completely out of his depth with this vital sector.

They want to have large organisations running farms, plus the selling off land will be useful for insane net zero wind farms and solar farms. I suggest you start stocking up on food, because socialism always leads to starvation.

As things like the NI hike only effect the private sector and not the public sector, surely this is discrimination and goes against the ESG guidelines that the governments has signed up to. Maybe one of the business bodies could test this in the courts.

Most land in Britain is owned by a tiny number of people, and a tiny number of corporations. It is not in fact owned by small peasant farmers scraping a living off the land. A very high percentage of farmers, even generational farming families are tenants. The new tax changes will affect around 200 farms. It does mean a gaping loophole in the tax system has been closed. This is a good thing. Even Jeremy Clarkson, who's been most vociferous about this, famously said when he bought his farm he did so purely because he wouldn't have to pay death duties on it - it's a tax dodge. We are not talking about passing on relatively small amounts under 300k (97/98% of estates) but vast wealth. Unearned wealth that solidifies privilege and perpetuates power in the hands of a tiny few who distort politics for their own benefit - against our own interests. Many of Britain's richest families are rich because William the Conqueror gave them land, the richest person in Britain, the Duke of Westminster is rich because Henry VIII gave his ancestor land. The current Duke inherited about 8 billion but paid ZERO tax on it. This is grotesque and busts open the total lie we live in a meritocracy we don't. We're rapidly becoming an oligarchy.

Methinks many tractors will soon be descending on Downing Street.
