HARLOW Council has announced its intention to turn the former Canons Gate allotment into a new Community Orchard.
The orchard will include a range of trees including several fruit trees and the community and local groups will be invited to be a part of the new project.

The plans were announced today by Councillor Nicky Purse, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Sustainability and Environment, she said:

“I am delighted that we are moving forward with plans to transform this former allotment into a new Community Orchard which will benefit the local area. Engagement with relevant stakeholders on our plans will take place over the coming weeks.
“The community orchard will be accessible to all residents and will be a great way to bring people together and provide fruit to the local community. We will be tidying up the site soon, so we are ready to work with the community to plant trees in the spring. It will be a fantastic project to bring new life back to this former allotment site.

Good to see an unused and overgrown plot being turned into something useful.
Because I haven't been there for a while can I ask a question? To the right of the gates for the Canons Gate Allotments, there are 18 very tired and ramshackle/unused council garages. Will those be knocked down to create 18 new car parking spaces for the closest residents? It might make sense to have two teams tackling two projects particularly when it comes to removing earth/hardcore?
I can tell you that the garages are most definitely being used. I have one myself, and residents from the surrounding areas use the others. There is always a waiting list for these ones. I do agree they are very tired looking though.
Yes i live near there better if there demolished and made in to car spaces.
Is this not the allotment that A Meal On Me With Love had? The allotment which A Meal On Me With Love cleared of all the rubbish the council couldn't be bothered to maintain? The one Nichola Purse took back from A Meal On Me With Love after was vandalised! A Meal On Me With Love cleared the land of salt with the help from 4-5 HTS staff!
This allotment was replanted by A Meal On Me With Love and then when it was time to harvest. Nichola Purse banned A Meal On Me With Love to harvest the the food which would have helped a lot of families in Harlow! How would this orchard improve the local area or lives of the people local to here? Who would be responsible for all the dog excrement left behind from irresponsible dog walkers/owners? Look at the current state of it now from when it was snatched back from A Meal On Me With Love! If the council or Nichola Purse was truly invested in this piece of land they would have kept up the maintenance of the hard work done by the charity? How much time and taxpayers money has been wasted on this silly project already? Who's idea was this? Why were the locals not consulted about this plan before blatant spending of public funds again?
Carly Burd planted a small number of potatoes and onions on the plot. Despite repeated attempts by Harlow Council to negotiate the contract with her, she chose to withdraw from the project. She also made unfounded and defamatory accusations against Nicky Purse and is fortunate that Councillor Purse did not take further action. Those defending Carly here appear to be her friends, and their opinions should be taken with a pinch of salt.
