HARLW Foodbank thanks the town for their generosity over December and 2024

2024 has been another ‘record year’ for Harlow Foodbank. As the year ends they have passed on food to support nearly 10,000 people: their busiest ever year, reports CEO Andy Thornton.

“Sadly, this is around 800 more than last year. It represents help given to 4,000 households across the town. It has been tough year for most of us. But today we focus on the thousands of acts of generosity that our neighbours have made towards each other, offering a helping hand for those in need of support…

“December started with a bumper 3-day appeal across the town’s Tesco store. Shoppers in Harlow gave over 4 tonnes of food – that’s 13,000 meal’s worth! They also added a further £600 to our collections on the day. We are grateful to Tesco who also give back their profit on these donated items – helping with our running costs.

“Since then a further 6 tonnes has been given: at supermarkets, from businesses, schools, local organisations, churches and individual donors.”

The Foodbank reported earlier in the year that demand is now outstripping donations, and they are regularly buying food to supplement the items that they store.

“Thankfully we have also received generous donations to help us purchase food – with many firms, clubs and individuals sending us one-off gifts as Christmas approached. Every donation helps and will get us into the new year with its new challenges.” said Andy.

In October the Foodbank moved premises to the former Wilko shop in the Harvey Centre. This has now served to bring all of MRCT’s projects together into one place: their Community Support Centre.

“This has worked brilliantly so far, as those who come to the Foodbank have on-hand advice to check that they can manage their finances, and help to any other services they need. We also have the Bounty Club, a low-cost supermarket on site which helps people avoid crisis, plus essential items for young children at Bump to Five, and a low-cost school uniform shop offering nearly-new items passed onto us.

“We have had help from all quarters! From the Essex Council, Harlow Council, Harvey Centre, local businesses, local trusts, the Community Fund, food suppliers, caring individuals, generous organisations, committed volunteers, people of all ages, all types… It’s Christmas, we’ve worked flat out for Harlow, and we are thankful to all those whose generosity continues to bring hope to the town.”

Great work by the food bank. Brilliant idea for the volunteers to be placed in the supermarkets just to remind shoppers that there are less fortunate families out there
