Popular walking and cycling route connecting Harlow town centre and The Pinnacles given £2 million upgrade

Lifestyle / Sat 28th Dec 2024 at 11:30am

A POPULAR walking and cycling route connecting Harlow Town Centre with local businesses has been given a major upgrade thanks to a £2 million grant.

The 1.4-mile route running from Netteswell Orchard to The Pinnacles on Elizabeth Way was built as part of the Harlow New Town development, becoming well used by commuters and residents alike.

It was identified for improvements by the government’s Active Travel Fund with works starting in May 2024.

The route has now been fully resurfaced with new streetlighting and drainage, as well as tabletop crossings at both ends of Hodings Road.

Welcoming completion of the scheme, Councillor Tom Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Infrastructure and Sustainable Transport at Essex County Council, said: “Across our towns and cities we are working to identify and improve key walking and cycling routes, providing safer, greener, healthier travel options for our communities.

“This particular route is very well used and I am delighted we have been able to complete this scheme on schedule and provide a much-improved facility for local people.”

The route will connect with the new Sustainable Transport Corridor being built along Velizy Avenue. This will link with other walking and cycling improvements in future.

Stopped using this route on my bike as I nearly got taken out by an ambulance with no blue lights flashing failing to observe the double stop lines giving pedestrians and bikes right of way on the entrance to the hospital. Many car drivers do the same thing in failing to stop at the double stop lines and theres too many people wandering around this area getting their nicotine fix outside the hospital or generally not paying attention to whats going on around them because their too busy on their mobile phones.

£2M is why we pay extortionate taxes, someone is making a lot of money of this. I would be most of this work could be done for 500K

Commentors on YH complain if the council do nothing but complain when they spend money. Some of you are impossible to please!

All this talk about cycling and walking, what about disabled people who have to use a car. Where do they fit in.

There will always be complaints whilst there are ore pressing issues. Has anybody seen the Grand Canyon cycle track behind Nichols Field towards Passmores school? Atrocious!.its OK though children use it going to schools .You could always put a sign up to the Pinnacles. Would that help? Other cycle tracks are available in poor condition A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL READERS There are other cycle tracks in Town

As the article says, this is an upgrade of an existing route, I believe the intention is to extend it all the way to the new Gilden way estate. However I don't really have a lot of faith in ECC, they have allowed our existing cycle track network to deteriorate massively and even built a new road across the Old London Road cycle track without any provision for cyclists and pedestrians to cross in safery. And, of course the Harlow Mill junction is still not open

Use it everyday, good smooth route, now. Bit of trouble with cars not respecting giveway markings around the hospital, safer to let them in/out. Need more done to other routes now and more accessibility around the northern part of town for cyclists, other than the roads.

There needs to be a walking and cycling route with a pedestrian crossing from bush fair to the stow. You take your life in your hands trying to cross by the rugby club, there's no safe way to cross the very busy roads. and then there's the muddy water obstacle at the bridge by the club itself. Treacherous

But i guess that doesn't benefit HGGT

Not the highest priority route that needed attention and not done properly: priority needs to be given to walkers and cyclists where roads are crossing the route and plenty of secure parking for bicycles is needed at either end if the route. ECC and Harlow Councillors need to go to The Netherlands to learn how to do it properly for this and all other cycling and walking routes around the town. Throwing money without making critical changes at a disjointed system that's dangerous and that's lacking in secure parking is a waste of public money.

Hopefully Cllr Cunningham will focus on the dangerous issues in Stansted next, disappearing footways, invisible road markings, overweight wide vehicles damaging property, the list grows longer.

Seconded @resident above, Howard Way is awful for walkers and very dangerous crossing second avenue. This path needs completely replaced and a new crossing installed at the roundabout, preferably to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians separately

This cycle track was long overdue for repair, and that has been done to a very good standard. This should be 'business as usual' and not gloried as dome dort of 'upgrade'. Now what about the rest of the overdue cycle tracks with serious damage e.g. adjacent to Katherines; Katherines Way; between Monkseick Rowd and Howard Way; the Howard Way footpath near Quarry Spring etc etc

Jo kavanagh this is about Harlow, issues in stansted would be better addressed somewhere specific to stansted

Reduce the traffic in Harlow

Such a pity that the Government is dragging their heals with allowing hardworking people to use electric scooters for work. Can you imagine the reduction in car traffic in Harlow? But as usual, Britain behind the rest of the world. Is it just me or has noone else realised the huge benifit to traffic and the environment that electric micromobility could have? Especially in Harlow with the cycle tracks.

This is great, but we need a lot more resurfacing of more used cycle paths and at £1million / mile I can't see it happening anytime soon. It seems to cost a lot because whenever you see the 'work in progress' it's more like a long tea break in progress, or mostly men standing around looking at the job rather than getting on with it.

We don't need more morons on e-scooters and illegally modified e-bikes. They're lethal. And if anyone says people ride them responsibility, that doesn't hold water, the simple fact that they're riding something illegally makes them irresponsible by default

Reduce the traffic, A Harlow business was selling electric scooters over 20 years ago, this shows just how slow govt is to keep up . I agree, the cost and low pollutive aspects of such scoters (inc e bikes) should make them an excellent travel choice

Worth a day trip?

This provides easy access to walk or ride from the Town Centre to view Harlow's greatest attraction; the huge whit elephant formally known as the GlaxoSmithKline building. Still empty seven years on.
