Harlow Council’s portfolio holder for crime details priorities for the year

AS we enter a New Year, the portfolio holder for public protection at Harlow Council, councillor Joel Charles has detailed his priorities for the coming year.

🚓 As the Cabinet Member for Public Protection, I am determined to ensure @HarlowCouncil’s community safety and enforcement functions are more proactive next year.

2️⃣ Safety inspections

All council, commercial and other large-scale residential buildings must meet fire safety standards.

Work with the Fire Service and other key stakeholders to make sure high-rise buildings, in particular, meet the required safety standards will continue.

3️⃣ Safe to go Stow

The council has promised to inject a further £1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣,0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ into The Stow project to cut crime.

Further maintenance work is also planned to restore pride in and around the local area.

The next step is to help set up a residents’ association.

4️⃣ Enforcement

Council building control, environmental health, licensing and waste officers need the right resources to carry out their respective enforcement roles.

Legal action often needs to be taken to guard against breaches – several cases will reach court early next year.

5️⃣ Visible presence

Patrolling public spaces is a responsibility taken seriously by the Community Safety Team.

Through the Community Safety Hub, the council will work with the police and justice partners to increase cooperation locally to tackle all forms of criminality.

6️⃣ Protecting neighbourhoods

To ensure #Harlow remains a safe place to live, work and visit, the council will look to build more relationships with community groups.

CCTV can deter potential offenders, so more external funding to increase neighbourhood coverage is being sought.

The council is committed to increasing trust in efforts on the ground to improve community safety.

Through the approach outlined in this thread, Harlow can become one of the safest communities in #Essex.

I wonder if Cllr. Charles has any knowledge of policing. If he has, please could he tell the town what that is? What is needed is a return to neighbourhood policing with police officers' visible and known in their designated area. The last government destroyed it and reduced the numbers. This government is talking not doing to retrieve the situation. Ms Cooper please start increasing police officer numbers not hiding behind discredited figures.
