Staple Tye: Teenager arrested on suspicion of kidnap and attempted murder

Crime / Wed 8th Jan 2025 at 01:47pm

Update: He has been released on bail until 12 March.

A TEENAGER has been arrested and officers have launched an attempted murder investigation after a serious assault in Harlow.

A police spokesperson said: “It was reported to us that, at about 2.15pm on Tuesday 7 January, a 17-year-old boy was forced into a blue vehicle in Terminus Street.

Then, at about 4.20pm, we were called by the ambulance service to reports of a man in his 30s with life-threatening injuries in Staple Tye Shopping Centre.

Officers closed the centre and paramedics carried out vital treatment at the scene before the victim was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious condition. Thankfully, his injuries are not longer believed to be life-threatening.

We have carried out several enquiries since launching our investigation and arrested a 19-year-old man from Harlow in Chatham, Kent, in the early hours of Wednesday 8 January.

He was arrested on suspicion of kidnap and attempted murder, and remains in custody.

“Officers believe the reported kidnapping and assault are linked”.

Sergeant Simon Roissetter said: “Officers are working around the clock on this case to ensure no stone is left unturned.

“I’d like to reassure those in Harlow that we do not believe there is any wider threat to the public and that officers will be visible in the Staple Tye area throughout the day while we carry out further enquiries.

“If you see our officers and believe you have any information relating to these incidents – in particular if you have any details or dashcam footage relating to the blue vehicle– please get in touch.”

I'm not sure we're reassured. When things like this happen during the day when people are out and about just shows there's no fear or deterrent. The town is full of young lads or men on e-scooters and e-bikes, covered from head to toe in black clothing and balaclavas and goggles which can only be to disguise their appearance. The drug activity in this town is beyond appalling and no-one seems to care at all. It's everywhere, when are the authorities going to take control or has defeat been accepted already. It's every day and large numbers, it's not one or two. The groups hanging around the town centre should be moved on, all these dodgy shops that spring up out of nowhere and never have any customers should be closed down. The future does not look good, will it be open gang warfare on the streets? It doesn't seem that far off.

So I guess the CCTV cameras they have under some of the under paths do work? But as the rest above has said, it's shocking let alone elsewhere but in Harlow how it's gone down hill.

It’s not just Harlow though, these things are happening all over the place. Lack of police and the pathetic courts not putting people away for long enough or even at all. People are getting away with things so do it again and again and get braver every time. Shame to see but something major needs to change.

I have lived in Harlow for well over forty years. And have seen our town go down hill rapidly. I remember when we had a thriving town centre, a great town show, as well as brilliant carnival. And great amenities. I often walk around my local area ( Staple Tye ) and just see Rubbish strewn everywhere. Its heart breaking 😔

This is something that happens all over and has done for decades, it's the nature of all civilisations...back to roman times, yes its sad, it shouldn't happen but it does. It's not just harlow, wherever people live there will be trouble...just don't write Harlow off, it's not all bad

hope the victims recover well. but terrible these kind of things happening here. I have lived in inner city london all my life and im shocked by the violence, anti social behavior and crime of this town. The cost of houses and living around here is so expensive, and yet you have to be faced with this constant threat and crime. I wouldnt feel comfortable leaving my teenage kids to walk around this town alone especially not the so called drug dealing Centre, sorry i meant town Centre. a so called developed rich country yet kids cant walk around safely. what makes the situation more ridiculous is that most of the crime, anti social behavior happens in the town centre right where the police station is. clearly the police are a deterrent. if it wasnt so serious it would be laughable.

People should praise Essex Police for such a quick arrest. Also, it is worth remembering that out Conservative controlled council installed the CCTV cameras in the underpass.

Why has our town become a cesspit for violent crime and antisocial behaviour is the cry from residents. Let me remind you why... Policing was systematically cut as the Tory government slashedbpolice force resources. 20,000 officers cut and 22,000 support staff cut which included community policing. You got what you voted for.

If I can sit in Costa and watch feral youths openly deal drugs in the town centre then why can't the police be proactive and adopt a zero tolerance policy to drug and other forms of antisocial behaviour.

Truth is they just not that bothered by the crime. Could stop it if they wanted to. Just crap weak government always. I say demolish democracy let Charles and William have a go at running things. Seems democracy just code word for how can a few people use politics to make as much money as possible. Most monarch run states do very well. I say stop shirking your duties and take control Charles. he's awfully quiet while UK going down the pan. The queen wouldn't stand for it rip.

TJ, you blame the Tories for cutting police numbers but don't mention the feral, violent law-breaking people for....breaking the law? Responsibility sits with the perpetrators. They know right from wrong and make a choice. They'd still break the law if we had one million police officers. Ah, but there's more chance of getting caught you might be saying? What about 10000 violent criminals being released early from prison, but people tweeting disgusting things replace them. That wasn't the Tories.

Anon... The Tories had 14nyears to investing not only the police but the.wider justice system. Instead they closed magistrate courts and restricted the hours crown courts could work. Slashed legal aid and made criminal barristers fees so low it was not worth their time to defend anyone. All of which crippled the justice system amd why race cases have take 4 or 5 years to be heard after arrests were made amd much9re besides. They were also well aware that prisons were close.to capacity yet failed to invest in building new ones. And they slashed the number of prison officers too. Prisoners run prisons now.
