Interview: New Princess Alexandra boss sets out his plans following new hospital announcement

Health / Mon 27th Jan 2025 at 10:13am

LAST week, we sat down with the new chief executive of Princess Alexandra Hospital, Thom Lafferty to see how he has settled into the job.

This is a mighty undertaking, with the hospital at a key point in its history.

Mr Lafferty and his team are pleased with the new hospital announcement made by health secretary, Wes Streeting.

You get the sense that they feel a road map has been laid out in first of them, more than any other time in the history of this project.

However, there is the challenge of present estate and its condition. We have been down there and seen for ourselves (film coming up).

But, in more ways than one, this is part of a maze of funding challenges facing the Trust.

We are simply here to ask questions of Mr Lafferty but we sensed his ambition and laser like focus on the challenges ahead.

In a wide ranging interview, we covered his first few months, the new hospital, cancelled appointments and his plans for today, tomorrow and the future.

The small print terms and conditions in the official Gov.Uk new hospitals announcement is worth examining: "Delivery expectations may be subject to change depending on local and national factors and the programme reserves the right to adjust the delivery plan as schemes develop in the future." See Labour's 'get out of jail free card' at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/new-hospital-programme-review-outcome/new-hospital-programme-plan-for-implementation#waves-of-delivery

I'm puzzled why Thom Lafferty is even discussing the possible New Harlow hospital. Labour have said it won't be built for 7 to 9 years if built at all. Mr Lafferty's own linkedin page shows him working at multiple health trusts for very short time spans. One trust, but multiple roles he lasted 4 years but the rest see's him move on every two years. I mention it as a consistent long term team is needed but you appoint a ceo whose own employment record by his own hand on Linkedin, shows a very short term approach to employment.

An excellent interview! Mr Lafferty offered clarity and confidence and is clearly on top of his brief. This bodes well for getting the best out of the current hospital with all its challenges and laying the foundations for a new hospital wherever and whenever it might be built.
