FEWER than one in 300 investigations by Essex Police involving stolen work tools last year resulted in a charge reports the BBC.

Nine in ten investigations were dropped without a suspect being identified, and tools were recovered in fewer than one in 100 cases, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request submitted by the BBC also revealed.

Security is a personal matter. For decades advice has been given not to store valued tools in vehicles, or ensure those vehicles are properly secure. It is unfortunate that many persistently fail to follow that advice, then cry copiously over 'spilt milk'.
If you are working on site or the other end of the country you have no choice but to leave the tools in your van. We had security devices on our vans, the thieves simply use heavy duty tools that write your van off to get in and you end up with no tools and an undriveable van in the middle of no where, so we no longer have extra locks on our vans so now we only loose the tools and not the van aswell. I have in the past identified a thief and had video evidence of the theft and individual yet still the police said there was insufficient evidence to proceed with a prosecution.
