Police use Live Facial Recognition cameras to make arrests in Harlow Town Centre

Crime / Thu 13th Feb 2025 at 07:28am

EIGHT more people have been arrested in Essex as officers patrol towns, cities and roads.

A spokesperson said: “Our Live Facial Recognition cameras were in Harlow on Tuesday (11 February), with officers from the Operation Support Group (OSG) working alongside local officers using our OpenGate system which detects dense metal objects such as knives.

This deployment led to the arrest on an outstanding suspect for domestic violence, a community resolution being issued for theft, and three people being stopped and searched.

Among the others arrested were two people in Witham, one for failing to appear at court and another for a public order offence.

Elsewhere our Community Policing Team in Maldon arrested and charged a man with theft.

“Between this we’ve also stopped and checked 115 vehicles, taking seven of them off the road for driving without insurance.

In Stock, we joined parish councillors and members of the local speedwatch group to monitor drivers in the village.

“And on our coast, our Marine Unit has been patrolling the rivers in the Maldon district”.

Superintendent Phil Stinger said: “Our LFR cameras are regularly deployed across the county, and have seen more than 40 people arrested who had warrants out for their arrest since we introduced them in 2024.

“Investing in technology like this means we have more resources to put officers on patrol to keep our towns and cities safe.

“All this activity took place in 24 hours and really highlights the variety of work we do every day.”

A note on how many were falsely stopped due to poor recognition would be in the interests of transparency.

They need to use it every day in Harlow Town centre. Will catch a lot of undesirables.
