Covid Day of Reflection: Where we saw the best of Harlow (and our thoughts with those we lost).
Health / Sun 9th Mar 2025 at 01:45pm

IT was in March 2020, that we published our first story on Covid. We proceeded to publish over 2,500 stories on the pandemic.
In many ways, all 2,500 reports were summed up by a friend who lost a relative. They said that “the first wave felt like numbers but the second wave felt like names.”
Over the eighteen months, we became familiar with names. On the National Day of Reflection in 2022, Passmores Academy produced a video with tributes to family members connected with the school.
We know they felt their losses deeply. They still do.
When you publish 2,500 stories, you see the many names. We saw Christopher Burgess, we saw Alan Simpson. At Princess Alexandra Hospital, we saw the loss of Barclay Mason.
We are also aware that underneath the statistics that we produced every day was a father, a mother, a brother or a friend.
We remember one particular day. That was in early January 2021. It was a day that nearly 200 people were in Princess Alexandra Hospital and over 1500 Harlow residents were registered as having Covid-19.

This reporter did worry that day whether this was just the tip of the iceberg or had we peaked. We had peaked. It was with much relief.
We are also aware that there are people still living with the long term effects of Covid.
Can we also give a shout out to Richard from East Ridings who as @RP131 produced the stats.
And as this is a day of reflection, and for the record, we also remember the Covid-deniers. Some whom stood outside schools imploring pupils not to take the vaccine. They appeared to have moved on to chem trails and ULEZ.
But let us go back to the positives. The Covid support groups, the leadership at Harlow Council (Mark Ingall and Andrew Johnson), those who stood out and clapped for carers.
There were many business that received help and much of that was organised by Harlow MP Robert Halfon and his office.
There was an amazing team at Lister House doing the vaccines. We appreciated Prof Gino’s blogs.
Unless you worked in the NHS (at the sharp end) we don’t think we have any real idea of what it was like. We know thank you doesn’t pay the bills but we are eternally grateful.

The churches that put on services on-line. Or just the random acts of kindness from neighbours.
The children from Church Langley who put message of love and support in the woods between Church Langley and Newhall.
This is just a snapshot piece on a day of refection. We apologise if we haven’t mentioned you. We will, one day, write a much longer piece. For many people, it was a horrible eighteen months and they may have, even five years later, no wish to remember.
But was we say, what we remember, over 2,500 stories is the fragility and vulnerability of this life but also the goodness in the vast vast majorities of people’s hearts. It is that we reflect upon.
Michael Casey: March 2026.
Covid the time the country lost its mind, the hospitals were empty at PAH very few people died of covid only I did an FOI it was less than 25 and most of those were very old. The media lied, the vax was dodgy and caused massive harm now being admitted. The press never questioned but just parroted. It was the worse time the country had, not due to a illness which hardly impacted anyone but it caused massive issues we still feel the result of today long wait lists, massive debt, inflation from printing money, mental health issues. It was also lab created as is now admitted pretty much everything you were told about it was a lie and being repeated with Ukraine. Next time do not bang a pan, question and look and think critically. Sweden had it right all along.
You spineless prick one of those was my daughters grandad and I’m sure her family won’t appreciate reading this comment, take your conspiracy theories elsewhere.
Until you loose people to Covid you would never really understand to watch them take there last breath and there nothing you can do but watch it’s heartbreaking I wouldn’t call 61 old or to the young people in this video
It was very stressful at the hospital and I have been nursing for a very long time. I have never seen so many death before Covid. When it all calmed down I ended with a heart attack. I pray we never go through another pandemic again.
Adam you are talking complete and utter rubbish..covid was real and horrible I lost a lot of my friends, I work in the hospital and witnessed alot of very sad events, your nonsence comment's are a show of ignorance and a lack of compassion.
Adam, you complete and utter waste of space. How dare you mock those that were affected either by catching it themselves, or losing a loved one or a friend, to crawl back under the stone, you came from.
I believe in free speech, I believe every one allowed an opinion, if you agree or not. For those who say covid was a lie, ask your self would this government of spent thousands on vaxs if it wasn't true. Would the government of shut the country down if not true. I say go talk to the people in hospital s , doctors ,nurses , ask them if they were empty. Would this government of opened a new hospital if it was a lie, the list goes on... I lost my granddaughter right at the beginning of this ,who had complex needs, we will never know for sure if it was covid, so I believe strongly that we should of shut down sooner. This was very very real , those that say it's a lie, well your entitled to your opinion, but I disrespect it .
Whether it was Covid that actually killed them if the person had contracted Covid at the time or previous to their death it was recorded as a Covid related death. The anomaly is that in the same period Flu deaths diminished. With any virus it mutates as is shown by the common Flu virus but people never really worried about it. Media hype and misinformed chief medical advisors did nothing to quell concern just made people even more concerned. 5 years on we still have people scared to death that they will catch Covid
Adam you’re dad should of pulled out would of prevented this post
Covid was real I hate peoples who say it wasn’t My mother in law in hospital for something else 3 years after the pandemic caught Covid and it wasn’t nice seeing her for over a week on oxygen struggling to breathe until her last breath I will never forget 😟
