No, IKEA wasn’t an April Fool’s joke and yes, we will deliver our promise to bring M&S back!’ says Dan Swords

YESTERDAY, news broke that Harlow has secured the arrival of a new IKEA store on Edinburgh Way. The Leader of Harlow Conservatives, Dan Swords, hailed the announcement saying “we are on a mission to secure investment for Harlow’s future and that this is ‘yet more proof we are delivering.

However, many residents feared the news was an April Fool’s joke given the day. Many residents also questioned whether the Harlow Conservatives’ pledge to bring an ‘all singing and all dancing’ Marks and Spencers back to Harlow would be delivered.
Dan Swords has responded to both matters:
“Today is 2 April and the news still stands – later this year IKEA will open in Harlow. This is incredible news for our town, not just because of our love for flatpack furniture or Swedish meatballs, but because it shows that we are delivering our mission to secure investment for Harlow’s future. It shows, alongside major announcements from the likes of Kao Data and David Lloyd that they are investing hundreds of millions of pounds, that Harlow is the place to investment because we are turning the tide of decline that the old Labour council left.
“And I absolutely stand by the pledge we have made to bring M&S back to Harlow. I provided an update on this just before Christmas and look forward to the big announcement soon.
“I know so many people doubt whether we will deliver our promises but I would suggest looking at our record. We said we would freeze council tax, we have for four years in a row. We said we would rebuild the town centre and we have the biggest regeneration programme of any district council in the country. We said we would build council homes for Harlow families and we’re building more than in the last 30 years combined. We said we would stop Newham Council buying a major development and we did. We said we’d create more parking spaces in estates and we’re delivering 1,500 new spaces this year.
“When we make a promise, we keep it and these investments are yet more examples of that. Just contrast that with the record of Harlow Labour – they increased council tax every year, allowed our once great town centre to decline, drove M&S out of town, allowed London Councils to dump their people here and were named the worst council in Essex during the pandemic.
“The Harlow Conservatives have a clear plan for Harlow and we are delivering it.”
I hope M&S are going in the Harvey Centre as the rumours suggest - be good to fill the old Tesco and Wilko stores with shops again - and what is happening with the old BHS ?
As much as I like Ikea I can see a major issue with traffic around that junction and Edinburgh Way, its bad enough now and with such a high profile company coming to the area its not going to be nice, Yes I agree its great for Harlow but we need to remember that this is going to attract buyers from very many miles away around Harlow, Harlow's traffic infrastructure is very poor, we see it every Sat and Sunday around that area getting to Queensgate, this will just bring it to a standstill so I hope Harlow Council have some form of masterplan to improve traffic in the future.
I will believe it when I see it...
And remember Cllr. Swords did it all for you. The evidence to show he and the council had a hand in this would be helpful. Otherwise it is again all smoke and mirrors with extra smoke from those meatballs!
we only see demolition in the town centre. Nothing seems to come after that part!
Mothercares old shop in Queensgate Centre would make a lovely M&S foodhall. Years ago we were told that Debenhams and Gap were coming to Harlow’s but that never happened and both those stores have disappeared from the High Streets
And I forgot to say that when it all goes belly-up I hope Cllr. Swords has the bottle to apologise to the people of Harlow. Remember the Burnt Mills development is still empty and Terminus House is still standing and Marks and Spencer have still to return. I ask again has anyone, and I mean anyone, got a spare ticket to Vancouver in October!
I think it's good news.
Let us know when it gets here.
I,for one, admires Cllr Dan Sword for his brilliant ideas BUT can we just go back in time a little, if you will? We,in Harlow have to endure a TORY Cllr named James Leppard who undoubtedly clashes with the diverse community of Harlow. Our diverse community is in dire need of a purge from racist biggots who openly express their hateful views for all to see. Can WE not start here, so OUR diverse community can work for a better town for ALL?
I can be harsh on politicians most of them are absolute muppets. However, I have to admit like Halfon (who did work hard and was visible and ran things like a jobs fair etc). Dan is out there grafting for Harlow to re generate the town and bring in business. Will it go perfectly no, there are always bumps along the way but he is the man in the arena striving and that I can respect.
How sad that some people are putting negative to great time Harlow has to improve it's town
Well said Tez! Let's add to the already nose to tail traffic in that area.
who the hell around here can afford to shop in m&s i work full time and i cant
Great news but we need to sort out Howard Way / Edinburgh Way traffic first as it is already a queuing nightmare and a new IKEA, being the nearest for a lot of people, will attract a lot of visitors
As a very proud northerner who has not long relocated to the area. , it would be amazing to see stores linke Lindt, Hotel Chocolat, Games Workshop, Disney Store come into the area, instead of over priced clothes shops and high end stores that only a small percentage can actually afford to shop in.
What is needed is a regular and better bus service to Edinburgh way so that the pensioners and ppl who don't drive have the opportunity to shop at alot of these stores. It would be better for those that don't drive and better for those businesses. On another valid point regarding the repaving of broadwalk , the barriers are up and no work is being done why is that ? Can you give a reply to that Mr Swords ?
It's good but the roundabout down there needs changing & a decent bus service from the town to there would be a good start TRAFFIC WILL BE A NIGHTMARE
Both things is good news. Our favorite the M&S and really waiting it's coming back.
