Football: Harlow Town win dramatic penalty shootout to reach cup final

Football / Tue 8th Apr 2025 at 08:03am

Thurlow Nunn League Cup

Harlow Town 1 v 1 Ely United (4-3 pens)

HARLOW Town won through to the final of the Thurlow Nunn League Cup for the second year in a row with a dramatic penalty shoot out.

The match ended after ninety minutes. Joe Brannan had opened the scoring for Ely after 47 minutes but Fred Agyemang equalised after 63 minutes.

In the shoot out, Harlow converted their penalties very confidently. But it took a fine save from keeper James Pellin to see the Hawks through.

What was also very encouraging was that the match was played in front of a crowd of 719. The numbers have been going up and up over the last couple of months.

The final will be held on Monday May 5th at Diss Town Football Club in Suffolk.

In the league, Hackney remain two points clear of Harlow with just three games to play.

Harlow return to league action Saturday away at Dunmow Town.

A film of events can be seen below. Thanks to Logan Young at Harlow Town.

A really enjoyable afternoon’s game of football, even though it was a blowy, windy day, which played havoc with the ball, the home crowd were really up for it, showing there vocal support, through cheering and singing, the result being the icing on the cake, come on you Harlow Hawks, we know you will give it your all in the final. But why oh why is the final between 2 Essex teams being played just outside Lowestoft? Is there really no other ground that’s neutral closer, so as many fans as possible get to see it? Someone get it sorted.

My understanding is that the League have a 5 year agreement with Diss Town FC to host the final, and this is year 3. Perhaps they thought the league cup final would be between clubs in the Thurlow Nunn Premier League that are mainly based in Suffolk and Norfolk.Trust Essex teams to break the mould. Still, it’s a nice day out…..especially if we win.

Oops. I stand corrected. The league have seen sense and the cup final will be played at Aveley FC - only a 30 minute journey.
