Housing campaigner pleads with Harlow political leaders to meet with (former) Redstone House residents.

News / Mon 12th May 2025 at 11:36am

AN organisation set up to campaign and help residents with housing problems has pleaded with Harlow MP Chris Vince and fellow politicians to meet in person with (now former) residents of Redstone House.

Emma Batrick set up Harlow Hive to (sadly) deal with housing matters such as this. For some time, Emma has facilitated meetings with residents who were concerned for their futures.

In April, YH editor Michael Casey met with residents to hear of their concerns.

On Friday, residents had to leave the property due to a prohibition order issued by Essex Fire and Rescue Service.

YH understands that there have been further meetings between residents and Harlow Council officials today.

In the meantime, Ms Batrick has written a detailed piece on Redstone House.

Power to residents of Redstone House

As part of her piece, she has called for Harlow MP Chris Vince and other political leaders to meet with the residents in person.

To this date, we understand he hasn’t.

His office issued a statement telling YH that his office is in “constant communication with the council…and receives regular updates.

“My team is working with the council to ensure the best possible outcomes for all families affected”.

Where we asked his team if he had met with residents, answers came there none.

We also believe this is the case with the leader of Harlow Council, Dan Swords and the portfolio holder for Housing, David Carter.

Two local Labour councillors, Maggie Hulcoop and Lynda Clark did meet with Redstone House residents.

Emma Batrick said:

“These living conditions are not right, and neither is the treatment which residents have endured. It is frustrating that many of the political powers that may have been able to help have not taken the time to meet with residents. While our understanding is that the landlord has acted within the law and Harlow Council has done everything within its legal power, that says a lot about how much the law needs to change to be on the side of people.

We once again urgently ask councillors and Chris Vince MP to meet with residents to hear what has been going on and seek compensation from the landlord and the building owner so that people have the financial option to move on.

“We once again urgently invite councillors to work with permitted development residents, charities and support organisations across the town towards creating a Charter of Standards for Permitted Development Buildings; featuring regular visits and enforcement measures that can be put in place for breeches of living conditions to landlords and councils which place people here – for Harlow’s long term residents and newcomers alike’.

Hopefully the councillors will get involved, surely this is exactly what they have been elected to do, help the people that have voted for them. Hoping that the landlords / owners will make sure everything that can be done is done also. They are the ones that have not ensured the building passes the fire safety checks. Now the residents are stuck in a desperate situation.

Did the people in Redstone House have a vote? However, they live in the town [or did] and MP Vince should at least meet them. Will he?

Mr Vince will lob out a vacuous statement of psuedo care and interest but expect no input from our one term mp. The councillors in this matter have just highlighted what has been pointed out many times before. By councillors becoming "portfolio holders" we have effectively lost that level of democratic representation. It is my own belief that they have skin in the game with a suggestion they are aware the owner of redstone house wants to tear it down, including boots and new look, to cash in on the land sale for yet more flats on that very large footprint. I'm happy for any portfolio councillor or Mr Swords to confirm this will not be the case should they wish? Does this help those who have been turned out on a minutes notice? No but what is suspicious in Harlow, is where developments are wanted by developers, all of a sudden they are emptied by the fire brigade at very little notice. I mention Redstone, the same with Joseph rank house in June of last year and sycamore field in Feb 2024.

Well done, Harlow Hive, and Emma, for highlighting the shortcomings of all political parties involved. Harlow needs to have a voice and some control over permitted developments and help the residents maintain better living conditions. There should be a Harlow Charter of Standards for Permitted Development Buildings. As the Conservative and Labour parties seem inadequate at policing these buildings, which party should we vote for next time, the Green Party or Reform?

To think that Chris Vince routinely 'rubbed shoulders' with Emma Batrick within Harlow Labour Party and worked together on the Save Our Libraries campaign (Emma being the mainstay), I would have thought courtesy alone would have granted Emma an audience with Vince and in turn Vince with Redstone House's former residents. Good on Labour councillors Maggie Hulcoop and Linda Clark, the ward councillors for Redstone House, meeting with residents. Labour councillors doing what the town's MP should be doing. Vince is so disappointing.

Chris Vince is a waste of time when you want hime to stand up for you he is nowhere to be seen but hint he is in the main Parliament building nodding his head in support of everything except his own district! He will do nothing and he is in it for just himself im afraid! These poor people are in limbo and its an utter disgrace!

Just to be clear, Harlow's Councillors set the policy as to who it does and does not help in respect of providing any resident a home. Last year they took nearly 2000 applicants off the Housing Register, stating that most individuals were not considered to be in "housing need". They also took the decision that most families living in a council flat were no longer eligible for a council house. This might just give an insight as to what their response is to the situation at Redstone House. Both main Parties are culpable for the situation thousands of residents find themselves in, housed in totally unsuitable property.

I agree with Mr Taylor. But it's not just people in council accommodation that have been waiting for a house,, it's all so people in private accommodation, being took of the council list, that have all so been waiting years for council... I don't believe we are no longer taking people from out side Harlow,, if my words aren't true, then I ask Mr Dan swords to answer me. I feel so sorry for Red stone house residents, you have left them in limbo.
