Harlow MP Chris Vince welcomes news on free school meals

Education / Thu 5th Jun 2025 at 04:12pm

HARLOW MP has welcomed the news that more children in Harlow and across the country are to receive free school meals.

Over half a million more children will benefit from a free nutritious meal every school day, as the government puts £500 back into parents’ pockets every year by expanding eligibility for free school meals.

From the start of the 2026 school year, every pupil whose household is on Universal Credit will have a new entitlement to free school meals.

Mr Vince was also delighted to welcome Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Minister of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson to The Downs Primary on Thursday morning.

We spoke to Mr Vince about the decision and what it means for his residents.

The two child benefit cap needs to be abolished.

Don’t worry, David, that will probably be announced shortly. But, as with the winter fuel allowance, don’t expect everybody will receive it. I wouldn’t be surprised if they only increased the cap upto 4 children, instead of no cap. Just in time to get their voters back, come next May’s Council elections!

Great work Chris, did you suggest they use the canteen in the abandoned PHE Government Building in the Pinnacles to make them? Or maybe even suggest it'd be better for the community that they actually committed to finishing it.
