Potter Street residents are calling for urgent action over speeding motorists

A HARLOW resident was left with a broken leg following a hit-and-run incident on Potter Street, reigniting local concerns about speeding on this busy residential road.
Residents, including members of the Potter Street Residents Association, are calling for urgent safety measures after police recorded several drivers exceeding legal speed limits during a recent survey on 14 May 2025.

“Every morning we’re terrified walking our children to school,” says a local parent. “You can’t even see the cars coming in places — it’s terrifying.”
A petition led by resident Susie Grady now has 110 signatures. But despite repeated calls for action, local councillors have yet to sign the Essex Parking Partnership form, a necessary step to trigger traffic calming investigations.
Campaigners are now considering crowdfunding to install signs and awareness materials themselves, as Essex Highways claims to have no budget for Harlow this year.
YH has contacted the three ward councillors for comment.
So long as the bosses of Essex highways get their bonuses and salary increases it's ok. No budget lmao. An easy fix would be speed cameras and some new speed bumps but I guess the local government is too thick for that level of thinking in this bureaucratic mess.
I agree with Barry. It's the same where i live, in the sticks as one would say but more in the evening and night. The traffic police did a bilz not so long ago but in day light hours. As i said it's in the evening, had a word with my councillor about it and was told to contact Essex High ways. I was told by said council we are aware of the the problem. That was that. Waste of time until someone gets killed. 🤔
Veg Patch, we were told the same, ‘Not enough deaths yet for action to be considered’ Some drivers/ motorcyclists seem to do a circuit of Harlow’s. Race from junction 7 to 7a, along Gilden Way to Mark Hall then A414 back to junction 7. Some nights you just wait to hear a bang when they’ve hit someone or the signs on the roundabouts.
