Harlow Council on track to deliver 1,000 new parking spaces

News / Sun 29th Jun 2025 at 07:43am

HARLOW Council is delivering over 1,000 new parking spaces in housing estates this year as part of its Building Harlow’s Future plan – doubling last year’s figure of 500.

Tackling estate parking challenges is a key part of the council’s mission to ‘renew our neighbourhoods’.

New spaces have already been created in areas like Broadfield, The Friars, Milwards, and Jerounds, with work underway or planned soon in Risdens, Halling Hill, Woodcroft, Rivermill, Church Leys, Rushes Mead, Hookfield, Hollyfield, Longbanks, The Dashes, and Pennymead — with more estates to be confirmed shortly.

The council is also seeking planning permission to turn neglected landscaped areas into parking areas in places like Chapel Fields, Orchard Croft, Wharley Hook, Latton Hall Close, Dellfield Court, Bishopsfield, Harefield, and Long Ley.

This ambitious programme is picking up pace, and the council is on track to meet its goal of creating 1,000 new spaces by the end of the year.

Commenting on the progress, the Cabinet Member for Housing, Cllr David Carter said: “The lack of parking spaces and inconsiderate parking is one of the most complained about issues in our estates. That’s why, last year we created over 500 new spaces last year – the most significant intervention the council has made in many years.

“But this year we are going much further by creating over 1,000 new spaces across the town. Whilst this won’t deal with every issue, this is a major improvement programme which is part of our mission to renew our neighbourhoods and is just another example of how we are building Harlow’s future.”

Are HDC also going to add the derelict garages that are on two levels at Nicholls Tower to this list, only asking as they are in a total unkept and terrible condition., each one costing HDC £68 in lost rent. The top level are mostly boarded up, and the lower level has heavy metal gates across to stop anyone even try to park there, although why would they as it's just a wet swamp in there, unused for many, many years. Would make a great site for development into much needed housing.

Thank you, Harlow Council, more parking spaces are desperately needed all over Harlow.

See what an efficiently run Conservative council can deliver. Harlow Labour are good at talking, not so good at doing.

David Forman - I haven’t been into a Council Estate for some years, so I haven’t seen the parking spaces. I have however seen Harlow Council's completed works to transform the previously overgrown roundabout on Edinburgh Way near the Queensgate Retail Park. Have you seen it? - It’s a total disgrace, an absolute mess - A shameful gateway to the town - I also had to go into the Town Centre last week - What the Council have done to that place since I last saw it defies belief.

Harlow needs far better and cheaper public transport, it’s far too dominated by the car as it is. And given the housing issues, open parking wastes too much land. Instead of more parking, we need high quality public transport as an alternative. As was the case when the town was first built and London Country ran all the buses rather than the mess of deregulation today.

As well as better parking facilities, to stop people parking. Up the kerbs on pedestrian walk ways, momples road through ladyshot is atrocious when will we get better parking for peoples safety, we also need better speed signs, this is a 20mph road and people use it to cut off from 1st avenue to get onto howard way avoiding the Aldi roundabout, i see cars travelling 50 mph plus down there, with no regard to the speed bumps in place which are falling apart, we need better traffic calming? Where the road is made into one lane like what they have at the small copper, please do something before there is an accident

There's not a significant problem in Harefield, in Pennymead and Ladyshot maybe. Plenty of parking in disused garage area, only needs lighting and an overhead barrier.

Churchgate Street IS a car park, always full both sides of the road.

It is good that they are getting rid of the old garages and re-using the space, but how many houses convert their garages, then park their car(s) on the road? Also, commercial vans parked up day after day, creating less parking for people's cars, where they actually live.
