Next phase of housebuilding at Elm Hatch begins

ANOTHER council housing site has moved to the next stage of its development as Elm Hatch moves forward with demolition of the existing buildings, to make way for more homes for Harlow families.
Contractors from The Hill Group are now on site carrying out demolition of the shop units currently there, with construction of 6 new council homes, plus commercial space, to follow soon after.
When finished the development will provide a mix of modern two-bed flats and a three-bed house. All homes will be allocated to Harlow families on the Harlow Housing Needs Register.

The council is already on site building 44 council homes in Staple Tye and there is much more to come over the next month, with mobilisation on site for construction to begin at the Arkwrights, Yorkes and Pytt Field developments. Work has also begun to deliver 14 homes at the former Sherards House site, and 6 at Woodleys.
At present, the council is building more council homes for Harlow families than in the last thirty years combined.
Councillor Dan Swords, the Leader of Harlow Council, says that the council isn’t just talking about building council homes, it is getting on with the job of delivering new homes for Harlow residents. He said:

“This is building Harlow’s future in action. By delivering on our missions to rebuild our town and invest in our housing, not only are we transforming areas like Elm Hatch, we are providing high-quality homes for Harlow families.
“This week we started demolition at the Elm Hatch site to prepare for construction, and we still have more to come with construction beginning throughout the next month on other sites all over the town – work that we will share with you over the coming weeks.”
Any new council homes are of course to be welcomed andit is noted that the Conservative administration is carrying on with the planned sites identified in Labours Local Plan of December 2020, a rare example of both main Parties working together. Far better though to have used these limited resources to build homes for older tenants which are not subject to Right To Buy, so existing tenants could downsize their home, releasing them for families to move in to.
The famous elm hatch cat will no doubt closely snoopervise the work
What?, they've started demolition before Dan can get a picture in a digger!!!!!! Down with that sort of thing. How on earth will he get 12 different digger poses for his Council Leader calendar for 2026?
