£1 million investment transforms Supported Housing Scheme for council tenants

News / Wed 30th Jul 2025 at 08:29am

MAJORMajor improvement works have been successfully completed at Hintons, one of Harlow Council’s Supported Housing Schemes, as part of the council’s mission to ‘invest in our housing’.

Over seven months, the three-storey block of 30 one-bedroom council flats underwent a comprehensive £1 million upgrade programme, including:

  • Replacement of soffits in communal areas, private balconies, walkways, and stairwells to enhance durability and fire safety
  • Installation of new communal and private balcony balustrade panels to improve fire safety and appearance
  • Fire-stopping measures in communal areas and every home to prevent the spread of fire and smoke
  • Replacement of external and communal doors to boost security, fire safety, and visual appeal
  • Installation of modern fire-rated communal windows
  • Full rewire and replacement of communal lighting with energy-efficient LED units
  • New aluminium access ramps to improve accessibility for residents

These upgrades all funded by the council, have transformed the scheme into a safer, more secure, and more accessible place for council tenants. The feedback on the improvements have been very positive from tenants.

Councillor David Carter, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Housing, said:

“This year, we’ve made the largest investment in our housing in Harlow’s history – a £136 million budget to improve services and modernise our homes. Of this, £75 million is dedicated to renewing council homes across the town, ensuring better quality, safety, and long-term sustainability for residents. The improvements at Hintons are one of many examples of how we’re delivering on our mission to invest in our housing and transform our tenants’ lives. There are many more major housing improvement schemes like this to come.”hintoins harlow

This is rubbish, I started a right to buy last August and it's been held up because Harlow council haven't done the required fire measures work which is a long list, makes my blood boil when they brag about things like this with a "£1 million " headline

Isn't this testament to the council, present and previous, that they have all not had the essential fire safeguarding in place. If it wasn't for Grenfell these measure would probably not been considered. Poor show by cllr Carter.

Utter rubbish. My mother lives at a supported housing scheme at The Stow. The so called "improvements" have been taking forever. I am still to see any workers on site doing anything either !!

Correct me if I am wrong, but it sounds like the council has press released a mandatory fire regulation update it is required today carry out by law but glossed it up as if it was a major overhaul transforming residents lives. It begs belief, what next, a press release of gas safe and electrical testing.
