Harlow Council pledge to sweep up the streets

Harlow Council / Thu 7th Aug 2025 at 06:54am

HARLOW Council has launched a new Street Scene Priority Taskforce as part of its mission to ‘renew our neighbourhoods’ which is focussed on ‘tackling forgotten and neglected street clutter that chips away at the pride of our town’.

The new Street Scene Priority Taskforce – now a permanent feature under the council’s Building Harlow’s Future plan – is transforming neglected parts of the town by removing street clutter, damaged railings, old road signs, and forgotten debris.

Initially launched as a trial by HTS earlier this year, the team completed over 600 environmental clean-up jobs in just a few months. Now firmly established, the taskforce continues to make a visible impact on hundreds of streets and estates across Harlow.

The team’s focus includes:

Removing abandoned, rusted, broken or outdated signs and street furniture
Clearing sandbags, traffic cones and signage frames from previous roadworks which have been left lying around on roadsides
Clearing unauthorised for sale advertising and estate agent signs that blight the town
Repairing or removing broken railings and bollards
Straightening and refreshing damaged signs
Tackling the little things that make a big difference to pride in the town

Launching the new Taskforce, Councillor Nicky Purse, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment, said:

“We are renewing our neighbourhoods – street by street, estate by estate. This taskforce is about restoring pride and delivering on our promise to renew every corner of our town. Residents told us they were fed up with damaged railings, old signs and neglected areas being left untouched – so we’ve taken action.

“By stepping in to fix even the jobs that normally fall outside our remit, we’re showing that Harlow won’t wait around – we’re building our future now.”

The Street Scene Priority Taskforce complements wider work to improve the look and feel of Harlow, including deep cleaning estates, removing graffiti, clearing litter, maintaining green spaces and transforming local infrastructure – all central to the council’s six missions to Build Harlow’s Future.

Something the town needs - but the amount of street lighting stumps covered in hazard tape needs the lamp posts replacing to relight our town

How about you fine the utility companies and estate agents who leave their unwanted crap laying around. You're quick enough to put letters through people's doors when they put stuff outside for collection to the tip.

Dejected, that’s the whole point, utility companies do get fined, under the Streetworks Act, by the either local or county councils for any barriers, signs or cones left behind on completion of their works. The barriers, signs or cones that are being left lying around are by Contractors who were working FOR the local or county councils on highways improvements or maintenance works. These Contractors should be being fined by the local or county councils for these offences, but as is usual, they just to turn a blind eye, the result these items are left behind, dumped on the roadside for years on end. As for the Estate Agents boards, these all appear to be connected with property lettings rather sales ones, as the latter ones are normally disposed of by the new residents. But the property lettings boards can be left there for years, as the new tenants or landlords feel is not their responsible for removing them and it’s in the estate agent interest for leaving them there.

Fern hill lane should be flattened completely and the current tenants moved on, it's such a blight on the town

Let me get this right..... Harlow Council are boasting that they're going to clean up out streets? It's OUR Council Tax funding this exercise and a service long fallen short. Let's charge the offenders please and make it easier for businesses and residents to dispose of unwanted goods and waste please.

How about repairing the pavements that are broken all over town before you do the superficial stuff!

Along the cycle track between Waterhouse Moor and Brays Mead several large plastic bags have been dumped. Looks like some sort of foam or plastic. Could these please be removed. Thanks

When will the grass be cut along velizey Avenue, by the Hides, this grass hasn't been cut once this year it is ridiculous. We pay for window cleaners that can not get to our windows because of nettles and the grass being so long. The other side of the carriageway has been cut many times. I have complained to our housing officer , who has contacted the right department, yet it has still not been touched.
