CHELMSFORD Racecourse presents its latest all-weather meeting on Thursday evening, complete with eight races; an amateur race, two maidens, four handicaps and a classified stakes race.

We begin with an amateur handicap over a mile and a quarter (5.30). Jim Boyle’s Fihrayn goes well at this track and is in good form at present, having been a close second of 10 last time out over course and distance. He could do well in this company. Apodictique made a good start for Gary and Josh Moore at Chepstow last time and could take a step forward here under an effective amateur rider in David Dunsdon, who has won on two of his last three rides.

Next is a mile nursery handicap (6.00). With a pair of non-runners declared, we have only four in this race, of which only one has won a race previously; Charlie Johnston’s Isamard Kingdom, who won his handicap debut at Kempton very impressively, but carries a penalty as a result. Kevin Ryan’s The Caddy Master ought to take well to this surface and could be our winner from stall one on what is his first handicap start.

The first division of a seven-furlong two-year-olds’ maiden is next (6.30). The three newcomers are Blakefell, Lion Of Mali and Bergamo Gold, the best of which might be the latter, but those with form already set a good standard. Parole Officer has placed on his last two starts and certainly is a main player, while Havana Smile steps up in trip having placed over the minimum trip last time. Bred more suitably for seven furlongs, he could be the winner here.

The second division follows (7.00). Belle Force, Mayflower Billy and Crown The Future are the debutants in this race, but Alkumatic Sam looks to be the one to beat on paper, having been a very close second on debut at Kempton earlier this month. Reliable Ricki might be the one to side with here though, looking likely to improve upon his first start for his new yard and has a helpful inside draw.

Next is the first division of a seven-furlong handicap (7.30). This is a fairly weak race, but Ruth Carr’s Brother Dave might be in with a chance after a good performance in a classified stakes race last time, and wears first-time cheekpieces today. Aspire To Glory has a major chance here, just one pound above his last winning mark from this track in May.

The second division follows (8.00). Vialline won two starts ago and could do the same in a first-time visor today, while Fallen Soldier might be capable up in trip for the first time and down two pounds. Polar Rebel is also down two pounds since his last run here, which was a reasonable fourth of 13, and he could be the winner from stall one.

Our penultimate race is a six-furlong classified stakes race (8.30). Invincible Navy is intriguing stepping down in trip from a mile and more for the first time, on what is only his second run for James Owen, while Pinjarra could bounce back from a lacklustre effort at Newcastle last time, having been given a little time to freshen up and ridden by a five-pound claimer.

The last race of the day is a three-year-olds’ handicap over a mile and a quarter (9.00). Stuart Williams’ Live Each Day could be the one to beat here, having shown ability over this trip at Haydock in July, but Blast The Dream has strong claims also in first-time cheekpieces for Roger Varian having come back down the handicap to his last winning mark.
