Protestors demonstrate outside Harlow Greyhound Stadium as part of week of action against dog racing
News / Fri 22nd Aug 2025 at 10:02am
THIS week, eight members of the local community – including supporters of Harlow Green Party – gathered to protest outside Harlow dog track. Those demonstrating held a number of signs and banners, with some reading: ‘Every Track Has a Freezer for Dogs Killed Racing’ and ‘Greyhound Racing is Killing Dogs’.

This action comes as part of a collaboration between Animal Aid and local campaigners, with protests targeting every single one of England’s 17 remaining dog tracks in the span of one week.
Yarmouth Dog Track was also targeted by a similar 8-person protest on the same night, in East Anglia. Another track, Birmingham Perry Bar, is closing its doors for the last time after the protest there on Saturday 23rd August.

This week of action coincides with the launch of Animal Aid’s Government petition to ban greyhound racing[3] which has already amassed thousands of signatures.
The campaign is in response to the industry’s own statistics showing:
Over 1,300 greyhounds died on UK tracks between 2017–2024.
3,200+ more dogs were ‘destroyed’ off-track due to being “unwanted” or “too expensive” to treat.
35,000+ injuries were recorded in the same period.
Racing injuries greyhounds can endure include: broken necks, spinal paralysis, torn tendons, twisted stomachs, and shattered hocks.
Founder of Shut Down Campaigns, Robert Gordon, said:
“This week of action is just the beginning. Our government has indicated they have no plans to ban this cruel industry, but local communities have the power to close their tracks, one by one. The reality is, greyhound racing has been in decline for years because people love dogs and they don’t like to see them suffer.”
Harlow greyhound stadium is 1 of the 17 remaining dog tracks in England, whilst Wales is introducing a ban for its last remaining track.
There are many people, including the team working at Harlow greyhound stadium, who are working tirelessly to find loving homes for greyhounds when their racing days are over. Greyhounds make greyt pets - we have three! If you wish to give a lovely dog a good home, see the stadiums website or Facebook page, or contact The Greyhound Trust.
We're told that all greyhounds get retired to loving homes and clearly some do...but the numbers just don't add up...so many are bred into the industry annually and they should live for many years after their racing career ends, where do they all end up when the dog rehoming/rescue world is in absolute crisis dealing with unwanted dogs who have done nothing to deserve this fate? What happens to the dogs who are not fast enough to race, or not competitive enough, or get injured? It's a real stretch to imagine all these dogs ending up in a happy situation. I don't wish to detract from the wonderful work re-homers and rescuers do, but the racing industry is cynically taking advantage of them to 'welfare-wash' their practices and sanitise what the public might otherwise see as cruelly irresponsible exploitation of these lovely souls who deserve so much better.
Greyhound racing is run solely for the gambling industry and should finish immediately.
Without the racing many greyhounds will not be born. Would you like to have not b even born.
I suppose these people will target Horse racing next, they have nothing better to do
Brian, we have plenty to do, thank you. John, it would be better they weren't bred for this, yes. Shit them ALL down.
Greyhounds and keeping them as family pets has been a way of life for many. Yet we just keep loving. Even the loudest protesters shall not demand to take our rights too keep greyhounds. I defend the right too race I defend the right too stand and protest against these people who demand closure.
I race my dogs at Harlow with trainer sharron sabberton we rehome all our greyhounds and are looked after impeccably and cared for sharron is one of the biggest rehoming places in the country these anti greyhound people need to get a job
We call ourselves a nation of dog lovers yet we allow this “sport” to continue. If just one dog is maimed or killed it’s one too many but we are taking thousands. How can anyone defend this cruelty?
I would guarantee that 99% of the people who want greyhound racing banned have never attended a race meeting or visited a trainer's kennel to see for themselves how well cared for these canine athletes are....too many people are happy to accept as gospel whatever dross and lies are pedalled out by a few ill-informed individuals who have nothing better to do with their time.
Very funny reading the comments. ‘People protesting should visit a kennel to see how well cared for they are.’ No actually I don’t need to visit a kennel to know a dog shouldn’t spend 22 hours a day in a concrete cell. Shut this shit down like every other country is doing. You pro-racers don’t care about greyhounds, you care about profit. Pathetic.
Shut down greyhound racing. The industry's own statistics reveal a loving hell for greyhounds: "3,200+ more dogs were ‘destroyed’ off-track due to being “unwanted” or “too expensive” to treat." Plus the deaths and the injuries. This cruel and outdated practice has no place in a progressive society. Ban Greyhound Racing!
sadly the usual lies spread by these apparently peaceful protesters. an abused and cramped up dog will not run . fact !!! they are not kept in cages 22 hours a day . FACT they are not poorly cared for. FACT the industry has strict regulations on how greyhounds are kept along with every single dog rehomed must be regiestered as such. my 3 lovely ex racers were truly loved and cared for and still are . such fools believe fools . So many have no clue about this breed and believe everything they read from the likes of Caged. who make huge sums of money from donations that never go to greyhound care!! go eat another lettuce and visit a kennel and learn the truth before spouting your rubbish
But really... Rehoming centres-kept in pens and kennels no? And horse racing? Seems targeting greyhounds is a more economically viable option because horse racing is way more lucrative. A horse can be kept ina stable, have a girth squeezed round it's midriff, a wedge of metal shoved in it's mouth, sat on, kicked and whipped?! How many non greyhounds are put down each year because the owner seems it too expensive to treat?! Thousands upon thousands!!!!!!!
Without Greyhound racing Greyhoundswould not bred in the first place. No one breeds Greyhounds to be pets..a fact lost on these idiots.
People do breed them. There is a dark side where hare "coursing" is still prevalent. We only know about when the crime is reported and shown in the media. Look on freeads, there are so many greyhounds and greyhound cross often even sold as 'working'. This is the scary stuff that doesn't stop, where people often break and enter land with uneven ans dangerous terrain looking to use these beautiful creatures to kill another animal.
There should be regular inspections on theses kennels, it needs to be made law. I'm not sitting hear telling you that all greyhound owners and all kennels don't treat there dogs with kindness, because its not true.. But having worked with the grey hounds, a good few years back, our kennel was fine, But then was asked to look after dogs in next stores kennels, and theses poor dogs were piled up in cages on top of one an other..It broke me, and I left there and then.. staff come in early morning to let them out back, around 12 there walked 8 to each handler, there watered and feed, then we were back at 5 to let them out again. When I worked there, I never knew which dogs would be there next day, if they weren't racing good, if they had an injury and wouldn't recover, we didn't know.. We were told not to make fuss of them, there working dogs.. Its a business first and foremost.. One was my favourite, I loved him, made fuss, couldn't find my jumper one day, he'd pulled it of peg, found in his kennel. My bad experience is why I would call for regular inspections on theses kennel property s, there are good ones, but all so very bad ones.... THIS NEEDS TO BE LAW.
Oh how little they know. This campaign targets the wrong tracks. The GBGB licenced tracks are not the real problem, these groups would be better advised to target the unlicensed so-called flapping tracks.
Ban flapping first! Gunna shut down that regulated and governed stadiums and let this continue? https://www.ukbookmakers.org.uk/articles/flapping/
I bet this lot supports all the left wing extreme thugs and terrorist that are in the UK and hate being British ect go find a rock crawl under it and stay there
A significant number of races are rigged. If two dogs are closely matched, one of the trainers will hamstring his own dog with drugs or over-feeding, and bet on the other one. They also impair the performance of a fast dog using various methods, so that it gets downgraded and the odds lengthen - then leave it alone and run it clean so they can bet on it. All sorts of shenanigans go on. Greyhound racing isn't about the dogs. It's about making money. From birth to retirement, every decision in a greyhound's life is conditioned by economics. And anyone who says al retired dogs are re-homed is deluded. A great many of these 're-homings' are performed by the owners & trainers. The box is ticked that the dog has been 're-homed' and that's that. In reality, many are then destroyed or exported - some to China. It doesn't bear thinking about what happens to those who end up there.
