Work begins on major transformation of Harlow Bus Station and Terminus Street

News / Mon 1st Sep 2025 at 07:11am

THE next chapter in Harlow’s town centre regeneration is now visibly underway, as contractors arrived on site last week to begin the major transformation of Harlow Bus Station and Terminus Street.

Scaffolding was erected to enable the removal of the canopy of the old bus terminal. This week, the main demolition will take place marking the start of major construction works that will completely transform Terminus Street and the Bus Station into a modern, accessible transport hub.

This flagship project, delivered by the Harlow Regeneration Partnership with Hill Group and funded through the Government’s £23.7 million Towns Fund, will reshape the area into a vibrant gateway to the regenerated town centre.

The new interchange will feature:

A canopy-covered waiting area and green space
A modern cycle hub for up to 80 bikes
A redesigned bus station with improved access and a new exit to Crown Gate
A cleaner, safer streetscape to boost footfall and confidence in the town centre

This project is part of a wider programme of regeneration across the town centre, with construction also set to begin in Market Square, Playhouse Square, and already under way in Broad Walk – representing the most significant redevelopment since Harlow’s founding.

Councillor Dan Swords, Leader of Harlow Council, said:

“This is a hugely exciting moment for Harlow. The start of construction at Terminus Street and the bus station marks the next major step in our plan to comprehensively rebuild the town centre. We said this would start in August and it has. September will see the Arts and Cultural Quarter underway, and October will see Market Square commence.

“After years of decline, regeneration is now becoming real – and there is so much more to come as we completely rebuild the town centre.”

Green space and a modern cycle hub. 😆that prob means 1 pot plant and some fake grass and as far as a cycle hub goes, have you any idea of the state of some of the cyclepaths in Harlow? It would be a miracle if anyone could even make it to the new cycle hub.

Traditionally, people came to the Town Centre mainly for the shops and the market. The market has long gone, and the space never got used for anything constructive. As for the shops, the place is dying. Little Walk has been boarded up for over 10 years. The Harvey Centre is emptying at a rapid pace, and the rest of the Town Centre has gone downhill badly. I’m sure the new bus station will be great but who’s going to come here? The Town Centre is still in decline…

I'm glad it's started BUT, there has still been no answer as to why once the buses started using the post office car park for buses, why the works didn't start then. More and more it looks like the preferred builder for council contracts, the house builder called Hill Group, has been spread too thin and this is the biggest cause of the delays. Cycle hub for 80 bikes? You'll be lucky if you see 5 in there becuse with a poor police presence in the town, bikes get stolen daily. Purely because I don't know, we were initially promised that Terminus house was going to be pulled down and the bus station rebuild was tied in with that. Now, with the walkway torn down, how will future residents of Terminus House get to thier appartments?

I agree with Seamus when it comes to the council putting all of it's building projects into one basket with the Hills Group. The new flats at Staple Tye are taking an absolute age to get built, many days like today there are less than a handful of builders on site. Same goes for the new homes at Sherards House, work may have started but there are days when no-one is on site. And what of the bus station and Playhouse Square, has anyone seen a proposed completition date? Although not the same firm, it is now 10 months since the repaving of Broadwalk was started and there is still a long way to go.

The market square and a whole lot of other works have taken longer than rebuilding a cathedral with much of the work remaining idle for many days. As Arriva busses will still be providing the 'service' a very large shelter will be needed for the endless waits, especially as it requires two bus journeys to get across town due to cuts out lack of provision.

I can't drive so am reliant on busses to go anywhere. But the town centre is truly awful (and sometimes scary). What's the incentive for anyone not employed in Harlow to go up the High now?

What a bunch of miserable and pessimistic lot you are. The town is getting investment where are some towns in the country are almost bankrupt. We should be thankful and wait for the outcome stop living in the past and look forward to the future. I welcome the changes and welcome any investment and improvements for our town and all the new changes introduced already e.g. new Ikea, new gym, investment in council housing, innovation park, national bio security centre, new town centre etc. Yes the investment is long overdue and yes money has been waste previously under previous leadership. However so far the changes seem positive and are in the interest of Harlow and the residents. With more investment comes new houses, business which is more money for Harlow council to invest back into our town - Embrace change.

Very well said James . It's just moaning for moanings sake . Especially opposition parties. Probably jealous because they are not doing it.

Careful James and Ted, positivity on regeneration stories will not be tolerated here. The usual vociferous moaners have been alerted and are now furiously typing to tell you your optimism is wrong, and only their version of regeneration is correct.

James, Ted & Matt. Perhaps you missread many of the points. Yes the town is getting investment but, much of it is being borrowed and the council still refuse to say from whom, what are the repayments and hiding things is what got the financial disaster that is Lakeside, leaving the residents to pay the bills. So it's right people ask, you promised this, why didn't it happen? you promised this, when will it happen?, you promised this, why did change things without any reapplication of the new plans? Harlow council now has councillors running the council. , this removes a layer of democratic representation for the people of Harlow and that is why the councils actions are questioned because at the moment, the council is marking it's own homework. So whilst you say moaning, it really is trying to hold our council and councillors responsible for the way they run Harlow in our name because only we will face the consequences

The councillors were fairly voted in by the Harlow people Seamus , so they can't moan

We need more buses and we need them to start earlier so people can get to work.
