Large number of police officers injured at “Unite the Kingdom” demonstration

THE Met’s policing operation is drawing down after a very challenging day that saw disorder, violence directed at officers and 26 officers injured.
A spokesperson said: “While both protests began largely without incident, it is deeply regrettable that a number of those who were part of the ‘Unite the Kingdom’ protest became involved in disorder in multiple locations.

We estimate the attendance at that event to have been between 110,000 to 150,000, significantly exceeding the estimates of organisers.
There was insufficient space to fit them all in Whitehall and Parliament Square, with crowds backing up onto Bridge Street and Westminster Bridge.
A number of people turned off onto Victoria Embankment to get out of the crowds which was understandable.
However, we then saw large crowds ignore police directions, turning left up Horse Guards Avenue, Whitehall Place, Northumberland Avenue and Craven Street in an effort to get into Whitehall, including into sterile areas and areas occupied by those taking part in the Stand Up To Racism protest.
When officers intervened to block their path they were assaulted with kicks and punches. Bottles, flares and other projectiles were also thrown and concerted attempts to get past barriers were made.
Officers had to put on full protective equipment and in a number of places had to use shields. Horses and dogs were also used to keep the Unite the Kingdom protesters away from opposing groups.
In addition to the violence directed at officers, we saw people scale fencing and scaffolding around Whitehall, climbing to height putting themselves and others in danger.
As of 19:30hrs we had seen 25 arrests for offences including affray, violent disorder, assaults and criminal damage.
Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist said: “Officers went into today’s operation knowing it would be busy and potentially challenging. They policed without fear or favour and approached engagement with all protesters positively.
“There is no doubt that many came to exercise their lawful right to protest, but there were many who came intent on violence. They confronted officers, engaging in physical and verbal abuse and making a determined effort to breach cordons in place to keep everyone safe.
“The violence they faced was wholly unacceptable. 26 officers were injured, including four seriously – among them broken teeth, a possible broken nose, a concussion, a prolapsed disc and a head injury,
“The 25 arrests we have made so far is just the start. Our post-event investigation has already begun – we are identifying those who were involved in the disorder and they can expect to face robust police action in the coming days and weeks.
“I am hugely grateful to the officers who were deployed in central London today, to those on duty in all 32 boroughs responding to 999 calls and to the more than 500 colleagues from forces across England and Wales who stood alongside us in some very challenging circumstances.”
25 arrests and 26 officers injured. For a group of 150,000 it's an incredibly low number but it's a number you'd rather not have happened. It is however, fare less than the palestine action protest last week where 890 were arrested, 33 others were arrested for other offences including assaults on officers. Rather interestingly, Sir Trevor Philips from Sky News said on his show this morning, that he had been in multiple parts on the protest and found that they were peacefull and the people he had talked to had genuine concerns, including some of those he spoke to whom were of colour. I'm not sure if the Unite the Kingdom marches will continue on a regular basis (unlike the palestine and palestine action regular marches), as I suspect most will feel they have made the point that is not going away. At this point I can't see us "doing a France" But if the silent majority ever did do a day of action then I'm sure it would bring things to a head.
The Palestinian Action arrests were all related to showing support for Palestine Action by holding up placards. None of the arrests were for giving police officers broken noses, knocking out teeth or head injuries like convicted criminal Tommy Robinson's mates. Robinson has multiple convictions for violence and added to them with mortgage fraud and contempt of court. What strange role models some have. Many didn't like Rayner for her stamp duty scam, but some people think Robinson assaulting an off-duty police officer is okay and will follow him to London. See Robinson's record at https://theweek.com/crime/tommy-robinson-a-timeline-of-legal-troubles
From the Ariel footage there was clearly more than 150k people. Parliament square and Whithall alone has held rallies bigger than this in the past. Seems to me the authorities seriously underestimated the number of people that would be in attendance and did not have much contingency for a larger crowd
From footage of live streamers there was overcrowding and people were getting trapped. People were tryimg to get out of the crowding but police had allowed counter protesters to block one of the main exit roads. People were being pushed forward and trying to leave but police were holding the line and eventually got pushed over by the pressure of sheer number of people. These counter protest should never have been allowed to block a major exit route
Not condoning any violence towards police which us unacceptable just highlighting the crowd management problems on the day. Given the numbers that attended its only a tiny minority that caused problems and its unfair to tar he whole event by their actions
David. Just because the left believe they are the guardians of morality (which they are not) it doesn't mean if they break the law, assualt the police and are arrested, that when they break the law it's not really breaking the law. Were 890 arrested due to breaking the law? Yes, Were 33 others arrested of which a number were arrested for violence towards police? Yes. If you say when the left do it then it's okay then that is where you get the accusation of a two tier system. David you're normally a facts and figure man. The injuries you claim, do you have any proof that those injuries you claim happened at the March this weekend or is it simply a distract? Robinson, I'd certainly NOT go for a beer with him but you've tried a typical left tactic of attacking the messinger to trash the message. He was one voice in a message of 150,000 plus voices. Guy and Deb, I think most were suprised by the substantial numbers of the march. With 150,000 plus attending and only 25 arrested then I would say it was managed well by the police despite such low numbers of officers and was an incredibly peacefull march
Seamus it's also testament to the people who attended. One streamer had to stop his live feed and try to extricate self from a growing potential crush situation. It was definitely a mistake to not allow the rally to take place in one of the large squares and that caused problems with overcrowding. It just really annoys me when only the small instances of violence are reported rather than the overwhelmingly peaceful snd well behaved mass of people. And I agree, I was fearful of a serious crush incident when thr opposing protest groups were facing off over a small gap. The numbers involved could easily have overwhelmed the police if the majority intent was violence. It was a very bad situation
Seamus, the injuries police officers received at Tommy Robinson's 'Unite the Kingdom' march were stated in a Metropolitan Police press release dated 13 September. I quote: "The violence they faced was wholly unacceptable. 26 officers were injured, including four seriously – among them broken teeth, a possible broken nose, a concussion, a prolapsed disc and a head injury". See Met Police press release at: https://news.met.police.uk/news/update-26-officers-injured-in-disorder-at-central-london-protest-501006
Seamus, the facts on Palestine Action's demonstration. You fail to mention that of the 33 arrests made for 'other offences' that 17 were made for alleged assaults on police officers. Two Metropolitan Police press releases dated 6th and 7th September do not mention any injuries to police officers. Also, both the organisers of the demonstration, Defend Our Juries, and independent observers from Amnesty International say police were the instigators of violence by using heavy handed arrest methods that consisted of squads of 20 officers arresting one person at a time. I list all links as follows, two Met Police press releases in date order and Amnesty International: https://news.met.police.uk/pressreleases/more-than-425-arrested-during-protest-policing-operation-3403163 https://news.met.police.uk/pressreleases/update-on-demonstration-in-support-of-palestine-action-3403168 https://www.amnesty.org.uk/press-releases/uk-nearly-900-arrests-palestine-protest-shows-governments-disregard-our-protest
Seamus, in case you don't want to read Amnesty International's view of the Palestine Action protest here is the key paragraph: "Amnesty International deployed observers to the protest, and police claims that the protest turned violent are a misrepresentation. Our observers witnessed the Defend Our Juries protest being entirely peaceful." Seamus, the injuries to police officers by thugs at the Unite the Kingdom march are contained in a Metropolitan Police press release dated 13 September. See Met Police press release at https://news.met.police.uk/news/update-26-officers-injured-in-disorder-at-central-london-protest-501006
Thank you for that David, most usefull. What I did notice is they listed injuries on the unite the kingdom march, thankfully few. They did NOT list the injuries of the officers injured in the same source in regards to the weeks previous palestine action protest? Puzzling. Anyhoo, hopefully this can all die down soon and that is in the hands of starmer, who let's be honest, is doing a very good impression of a man way way out of his depth.
If you want to look at the behaviour of the opposing protesters. They don't protest quiet they antagonise from the moment they are within earshot calling anyone who doesn't agree with them nazis, racists and fascists , relentlessly. Im fascinated by human behaviour so I watch a lot of the live streams and for the most part they are ignored with the other side ignoring their behaviour for the large part. It strikes me that a lot of the opposing group is simply there to rile and cause problems. And why bring palestine flags to protests that are nothing to do with palestine. Let's not paint all these people as peaceful saints, there are bad among them too. I've seen footage at the arms protest where they were physically shoving police officers. You could argue if the other side were to shove police officers batons and cs gas would come out. Whichever way you look at it people are fed up and tensions are high. I don't see a political solution and I don't think many people can and that's why we are seeing these protests from both sides
Seamus, I agree with your point about Sir Keir Starmer who is being driven by Morgan McSweeney. As for Deb bee, I agree with your last point about "many people can't see a political solution and that's why we are seeing these protests from both sides." The Labour government has failed to deliver or watered down its manifesto promises. In some cases delivered things not even mentioned prior to the election. I'm reminded of the old adage "you reap what you sow".
Well said seamus. ..💯 percent right you are. I was there and what a beautiful fantastic day it was but there was more than 150.000........EXCELLENT. X
Ay_audits 'police lose control' on youtube. at the beginning of this video you can see how close this event came to another Hillsborough . People were trying to escape a potential crushing situation and police were trying to stop them and taken down by the force of the sheer number of people. People who had got out were trying to alert the police. It's possible the police injuries happened here. People were just trying to get to safety and others are trying to pull them out. You can argue people ended up in areas they weren't supposed to be but it sounds like a lot it wasn't very well organised for that number of people
Deb bee, you are correct, the police have a lot to answer for, into the ensuing mayhem on Saturday. For a start, they were the authority that gave the permission for the rally to take place, agreeing the time and route. Then, why did they then, allow this counter demonstration, access to Whitehall, at the same time, especially when it was well known that there would be trouble when these 2 groups have clashed in the past, as recently seen at Epping. Why did the police totally underestimate the huge numbers who attended, especially with the numbers of Union and St George’s flags being erected across the country. Why did the police then try to separate the 2 opposing groups by using their mounted and riot police solely against the Unite the Kingdom group, while leaving the anti-racism group where they were standing. How did they believe that they could push back those at the front of this group, when there were 1000’s behind them, who had no knowledge what was preventing them from moving forward. It was extremely lucky that there were no serious crush injuries, given the numbers of people involved. They should have, as they have done on other occasions, with other opposing groups, kept them well apart and not down the same street in Whitehall. The police should have a number of questions to answer about the way they handed this rally, that resulted in unnecessary injuries to the front line police officers, that could have been so easily avoided. But that won’t be happening, as it appeared to achieve its aim, to discredit all the Unite the Nation protesters as a group of thugs, as they have done in the past.
Stuart J I can't blame the police on the ground, they were in an impossible high stress situation, but it was purely luck and a largely well behaved crowd that the situation in the video didn't involve mass casualties. It would seem that the number of people who were able to get out relieved the pressure on the front, and by the look of it, somehow the message got further back or people were no longer entering the area. There's no doubt there was an element there to cause trouble as there is in any mass gathering, but there could have been many innocent casualties there Saturday. I don't know why there isn't an opportunity for people to sit down as grown ups and talk things through to try and find a solution. Our political parties need to take this seriously and actually listen to people's concerns and act. This country is a mess and I fear things will only escalate if the issues are continued to be ignored, with blaming, name calling and shaming on all sides. People can't turn on the government so they're turning on each other.
