A DISPERSAL order will in place in Sawbridgeworth over Halloween as part of the constabulary’s efforts to deter anti-social behaviour.

The section 35 order will be in place from 6pm on Friday 31 October until 4am on Saturday 1 November, to help protect members of the public from those who use Halloween as an excuse to commit crime and disorder.

Under the order, officers can direct anyone to leave the specified areas within the town (as shown on the map) immediately. Failing to do so is a criminal offence and could result in an arrest. Anyone aged under 16 can be taken home to parents/guardians.

Inspector Mark Collins, from the Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “In previous years we’ve received an increased number of calls on Halloween, regarding anti-social behaviour and crime involving young people.

“In addition, officers have had fireworks thrown at them and been injured as they attempted to seize fireworks from people aged under 18.

“This kind of behaviour is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated – either towards members of the public or to our officers who are simply out doing their job.

“The orders are being put in place to help protect members of the public from the small minority who use Halloween as an excuse to commit crime and disorder.

“We’ve been liaising with local schools, supermarkets and businesses to pass on advice in the run up to the day and are urging parents and guardians to ensure they know where their children are.

“Additional officers, both uniformed and plain clothed, will be on duty, carrying out proactive patrols.”
