2000 Murders Too Many
By Kay Morrison
I HAVE been trying to avoid this because it’s horrifying and difficult to face but I can’t get the 25th of November out of my head. That’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women; on that day in Harlow some of us meet at the Obelisk to acknowledge women who have been killed. It’s important.

The Femicide Census records deaths of women killed, with information about them and the men who killed them. The most recent report lists the first 2000 completed cases, where criminal proceedings were completed or where the murders were evidenced in another way. The census highlights the stark reality of an international phenomenon replicated in the UK, commenting ‘the killings of women by current or former partners, family members or predators …. share root causes ….’

Shockingly, too, violence against women has almost been normalised, scarcely publicised but these women had lives, families, jobs and they probably had hopes for a future, a future without fear.
The vast majority of victims were murdered by men in their own homes, usually in the home they shared with the perpetrator. The majority of victims (73%) were aged between 20 and 60; 83% of the men who killed were aged from 20 and 59. Barbaric, bestial things have been done to older women during and after their murder.
Misogyny is evident in many of the murders. If you’re in any doubt, knowing the details of these killings would certainly convince you.
Predictably, most of the murderers were born in the UK (83%). I’ll spare you descriptions of the methods used, the violation of the dead body and of the sexual violence.
Being shocked by the continuing deaths and the numbers of murdered women isn’t enough. We need change. Now. We need action which will make a difference. Government policy and strategy to address men’s violence against women and girls must be cross-departmental and effective. Currently most cases of abuse don’t result in a criminal record!
We all have to take violence against women and girls seriously, tackling it directly in our schools, colleges, all our institutions. These women matter. They’re our sisters. They were mothers, daughters, grandmothers. This cannot continue.
2000+ women murdered.
2000 + too many.

It’s shocking and tragic but the UK is one of the safest countries in the world for women. The highest murder rates on women are in countries like South Africa, Jamaica, Antigua, Trinidad and Tobago, Central African Republic, Botswana etc Any human being murder is to many.
Indeed, 2000+ is far too many, but platitudes don't get the job done. The following link from Women's Aid says your Labour government failed last year to provide the money needed to make an impact. I look forward to you publishing your letter to Sir Keir Never Here and Rachel from Accounts admonishing them both for being tight and demanding a proper funding allocation this year: https://womensaid.org.uk/womens-aid-responds-to-the-first-budget-of-the-new-labour-government/#:~:text=Isabelle%20Younane%2C%20Head%20of%20External,Chiefs%20Council%20earlier%20this%20year
Oh, nearly forgot. The Employers National Insurance contributions hike is putting many charities under pressure. The Telegraph reported in January this year: "Women’s Aid said the Chancellor’s tax rises would wipe out up to 100 per cent of the money they received from Gift Aid." Again, I look forward to you publishing your letter to Sir Keir and Rachel demanding more NI relief for charities. See the Telegraph's report at https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2025/01/12/domestic-violence-refuges-risk-national-insurance-raid-uk/
It’s a great article and it’s well worth looking into and stopping all violence against women. It fails to mention that more men die from knife, more men die from gun crime, more men die from suicide, more men die in wars, more men die in traffic accidents, more men die in work accidents but also more women die whilst giving birth than men do.
The ONS figures for 2024 show a the lowest number of homicides recorded since the YE March 2016. Compared with most other crimes, the homicide rate remains very low, with 9.5 homicides recorded per million population during YE March 2024. The 2000 women claim interested me so I went looking. I was dissapointed to find things such as; Those killed by Michael Ryan, those found in a lorry container in Essex, Cockle pickers in Morecombe bay, July 7th bombings, Derrick Bird shootings, hillsboroughs 96, london Bridge attack, Manchester Arena bombings etc in those 2000 figures. For me this sullies the 2000 women claim and does a disservice to those women who were killed by a male attack. Therefore the 2000 claim by the researchers? of femicide census are questionable. That said, the world would be a better place without such violence and often women are seen as an easier target by males who are let's be honest, sub human. I hope that the education in schools is responsible for the drop in attacks on women and that need to back away from violence is filtering through.
Good points, Kay and David Foreman. The one point I would add to your 'Sir Keir, never here' post, David, is this should state: Sir Keira, never here, two tier, free gear.
Duly noted Colleen.
