Old Harlow councillor opposes closure of Memorial University

COUNCILLOR Joel Charles opposes the closure of Memorial University’s campus based in Old Harlow.

He is calling on the university to re-think its emerging plan to tackle the institution’s financial deficit:

Cllr Charles said: “Canadian students and academics have formed, for decades, an important part of the community in Old Harlow. Strong friendships and educational partnerships have been established as a result. Former students have stayed in contact with people and organisations in the town because they have found their learning and cultural experience at the campus to be life-changing.

“I understand that various options for the future of the campus are being looked at, including turning it into a trade hub for the Newfoundland and Labrador province. My hope is that the leadership of the university take into consideration the bigger picture. The relationship between Canada and the United Kingdom is maintained by building on local partnerships that already exist between both countries.

“I am keen to engage with the leadership of the university to make the case for the campus to remain open before a final decision is made after the spring academic term in 2026. It would be a serious blow if the campus in Old Harlow is forced to close.”
