Police team up with William Martin pupils to catch speeding drivers outside school

Crime / Fri 28th Nov 2025 at 09:27am

LAST week, Harlow Special Constables, in partnership with the Safer Essex Roads Partnership and pupils from William Martin Primary School, carried out speed checks along Tawneys Road, Harlow as part of Road Safety Week, to help reduce speeding and improve road safety.

The activity involved conducting a speed check and engaging with Year 5 pupils, providing them with an opportunity to interact with drivers regarding their speed and to raise awareness about the dangers of speeding.

Results
12 drivers were recorded driving over the speed limit
The highest speed recorded was 39 mph in a 30pmh zone.
In addition to the speeding offences, a Traffic Offence Report (TOR) was issued for the use of a mobile device while driving.
Here’s why speeding is dangerous:
➡️ Higher speeds reduce reaction time to obstacles.
➡️ Faster speeds increase stopping distance, risking collisions.
➡️ High-speed collisions cause more damage and injuries.
➡️ Speeding makes vehicles harder to control, especially in bad weather.
➡️ Speeding endangers pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers.

While speed checks not only catch speeding drivers it also discourages others from speeding. Encouraging drivers and motorcyclists to consider their behaviour helps make roads safer for everyone.

Our Special Constables are an integral part of Essex Police, providing a visible presence in the neighbourhoods and building on community relationships.
