A NEW initiative aimed at tackling digital exclusion among older residents is underway at Hyde Mead House, an independent living scheme in the rural village of Nazeing.

Bridging the digital divide
The Treasure Trove Project brings together reliable internet access and tailored digital skills training to empower residents with the confidence and tools to navigate the digital world.
The project is the result of a collaborative partnership between Epping Forest District Council (EFDC), Essex County Council, Openreach, Social Telecoms, Voluntary Action Epping Forest, the Essex + Herts Digital Innovation Zone (DIZ), and a dedicated team of Community Champion Volunteers.
Inspired by a former resident, Treasure, who was passionate about staying connected with family abroad through video calls, the project honours her legacy by helping others overcome digital barriers. Treasure sadly passed away in late 2024, but her story continues to inspire the mission to enhance digital inclusion in the community.
Empowering residents through connectivity
The project includes:
Fibre broadband installation to each flat and the communal lounge, delivered by Openreach as part of a wider rollout across EFDC’s independent living schemes
Communal Wi-Fi in the lounge, installed by Social Telecoms, with funding secured until April 2027
A 6-Week digital skills workshop series, based on the Government’s Essential Digital Skills Framework, covering topics such as internet navigation, online safety, using devices, and accessing health and social care services
Funding for the project has been secured from multiple partners, ensuring both connectivity and community support:
Essex County Council – covering installation costs and the first six months of broadband service
Social Telecoms – providing a further six months of broadband through social value commitments
Epping Forest District Council – funding an additional 12 months of broadband access
UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) – supporting the delivery of digital skills workshops, led by Voluntary Action Epping Forest
A Community-driven effort
Councillor Kaz Rizvi, Portfolio Holder for Community, health and wellbeing said: “The Treasure Trove Project is a shining example of what can be achieved through partnership and community spirit. By providing both the infrastructure and the skills training, we’re not just connecting people to the internet – we’re connecting them to opportunities, services, and each other.”
Councillor Louise McKinlay, Essex County Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communities, Economic Growth and Prosperity said: “This project is a fantastic example of what’s possible when councils, businesses, and volunteers collaborate.
“By sharing skills and resources, we’re helping older residents feel confident online and stay connected to their community.”
