Letter to Editor: So this discredited government wants to restrict jury trials?

Dear Editor,

SO this discredited government want to restrict jury trials in England and Wales: Why? Well not for reducing the back log in the criminal courts but to show they are just doing something. They will not do it under their current plans as Geoffrey Cox MP highlighted so brilliantly yesterday in the parliamentary debate. Sadly this debate concentrated on offences rather than the principle of jury trials.

In Harlow the former MP, Mr Halfon, told me in 2019 that the backlog was caused by “a note in the Treasury in 2010 that stated there was no money left”. That was so pathetic it was funny given he voted to close the local magistrates and county courts.

And as for MP Vince, who voted for the government plans, I would suggest he did some research on this important issue and spoke to people who know about the subject: I am available for a fee. It would help pay for the publication of my book on the subject area.

Overall the reduction in jury trials would cost more because it would create many miscarriages of justice. Instead the government should re-open all the criminal courts closed by the Conservatives, invest in every area of the criminal justice system including, inter alia, prisons, probation and police services.  The government bill in its current format will be lost in the end because MP’ know jury trials are a key part of our unwritten constitution which the electorate support and recognise its importance.

You need to sit on a jury and see how much time is wasted on petty cases going to crown court. 2 weeks wasted for 2hrs on a court case. Travel expenses, loss of earnings, food allowances all paid out.

T Ruth Sayer, what is a petty offence? Have you considered the consequences of an allegation of a criminal offence let alone a conviction? If not could I suggest that you do. The current system is being challenged not for justice but political arrogance believing it is a vote winner: Is that what you want?

Gary is right. Conservative Sir Geoffrey Cox and Green Sian Berry made the point that civil protest was under attack. Berry said: "The category of triable either-way cases where jury trials will be restricted includes several of the specific offences created or made more serious by successive Governments in the wake of successful non-violent protest action. By successful, I mean non-violent actions that have—yes—caused inconvenience but which did what non-violent direct action is for: directly aiming to prevent harm to people or the environment, or to create a stir that raises public awareness of serious injustice." Plus, the arguments about backlog have been shown to be more about lack of resources and poor case management by the CPS. Labour MP Charlotte Nichols highlighted ground breaking work in Liverpool and Preston Crown courts that is reducing their backlog. She also disputed the Bill being to help rape victims. As one herself, Nichols said: "Do not say that this Bill helps deliver justice for rape victims until it actually, materially does."

The speech in parliament by Nichols is worth a read. So it is a vote winner-Gary you mean giving people what they want, sounds like democracy to me. Lets bring back the death penalty whilst we are at-stops repeat offending and saves a fortune

I agree Boris, let's bring back beheadings! Scrap voting altogether and reintroduce serfdom.

I agree with Boris, bring back hanging, now that we have the help of DNA. Also bring back National Service for 18 to 20 year olds . Drum a bit of respect of others into them.
