Ward by ward: Latton Bush and Stewards: Is this where the Reform surge starts?

Elections / Tue 21st Apr 2026 at 06:37pm

WHEN this seat was contested two years ago (it was an all out election due to boundary changes), the Labour candidate polled the most votes.

Luke Howard was followed by two Conservative councillors.

That goes to show that it was a ward where the vote can go in a number of directions.

There was one year (2018), when the Conservative candidate beat the Labour candidate by one vote.

But as we know 2026 may be very different.

And once again the question is; will it be the year for Reform or can the Dan Swords Factor (sounds like a 60’s Jazz combo) swing it for the Conservatives?

First things first. Conservative councillor Stacey Seales was supposed to be defending the seat. In fact she did produce a few promotional video. The next thing we know, Ms Seales told us she was de-selected. If you want to vote for her, she is standing in Chelmsford.

We always found that Stacey’s heart was in the right place. She was also a bit eccentric, a bit non-sequitur but, we recall once seeing her at her surgery in a church hall and thought, that really is what local democracy is all about.

She has been replaced by John Steer, who again, is one of the Conservatives loyal foot soldiers. He may well not light up the room but he will get the job done.

The Reform candidate is Stephen Thompson. He should have a very good chance here. You do feel that if a Reform candidate can win here and then work this ward, then they could have a few years as the local councillor. That’s big if though.

But they key thing here is to look at the percentages. Can Reform get over 50% of the vote?

It feels like that type of ward. Conservative Alasdair Gunn is highly respected, especially for the work he has done in Berecroft. Before him, Labour’s Mark Wilkinson was an excellent councillor.

It may be a sign of the times in 2026, that we have got this far down this news item, without mentioning the Labour candidate. We just happen to think they may well be in for a torrid time and may well be in damage limitation territory.

Howard Beaumont is a welcome new member of The Green Party. As we will say on all these pieces, the Greens make a very valuable contribution to political life in Harlow. They just need to really work on increasing members between the age of 18-34. The whole Gen Z thing.

YH Prediction: Reform Gain

John Steer has been an excellent ward councillor in the past. He is thoroughly decent and deserves our votes to ensure the great progress on regeneration is not stalled or jeopardised. It has to be the local Conservatives this time in the interests of Harlow.

We can't risk Labour, Reform or Greens who have no experience in the complex work involved with regeneration of our town. Dan Swords and his team are working and delivering. This is no time to rock the boat. This is a local election about Harlow, not a national election to get rid of Starmer. Best to go with John Steer, local Conservative .

"Ward by ward: Latton Bush and Stewards: Is this where the Reform surge starts?" Voters need to be warned that a Reform surge in Harlow will derail the regeneration programme of Dan Swords capable team. You will get what you vote or don't vote for. With Dan's local Conservatives Harlow is in safe hands!

Vote John Steer

We have to vote for the local conservatives. They are hands down the only fit option for Harlow.

Yes, vote John Steer for continued progress on regeneration. The others are a wasted vote, especially the Reform Party.

Interesting concept. Vote Tory or all contracts for regeneration are null and void it seems.

Mike Harlow, you are missing the point. A change of governance now would be highly disruptive to progress given that San Swords team are highly experienced and have been involved since the outset. Reform or Labour have no background, experience or complex project management skills for this. It is not political but rather about effective management and execution and this is best left to the local Conservatives rather than changing horses mid course.

The only party that will benefit Harlow is Dan Swords local Conservatives. There candidate here is John Steers who is an experienced and very dedicated councillor.

I have read the Reform leaflet and it is mumbo jumbo, mixing mainly national government issues like immigration with very little local matters. This is a LOCAL election. It will not stop any boats! This election is about Harlow and who is best placed to run our town. Reform have no clear ideas or plans, nor do they have any experience. The only serious option is Dan Swords local Conservatives, pressing ahead with a coherent plan to regenerate and uplift our town.

Yes, I too got a leaflet from Reform with a picture Nigel Farage. I didn't know he was a council candidate in Latton Bush & Stewards Ward!!! 🤣
