Harlow MP Chris Vince supports clean energy drive as Labour unveils new measures to help ease cost of living

News / Sun 26th Apr 2026 at 10:15am

THE Labour MP for Harlow, Chris Vince has backed new measures to ramp up this government’s clean energy mission and protect family budgets from shocks on the global stage.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has unveiled a number of new policies as Labour goes further and faster to deliver the clean, homegrown energy it promised in its manifesto for Essex.

As well as delivering a cleaner future for our country, the plans ensure long term energy security for Britain and help cut the cost of living for working people – safeguarding them from the consequences of conflicts abroad, such as the war in Iran.

The new measures include making it easier for renters, those who live in flats or those without a drive to install EV chargers, solar panels and heat pumps, giving more people the opportunity to take advantage of cheaper, cleaner energy.

The plans also see a massive expansion of solar panels and wind turbines across the public estate, including on brownfield and industrial sites or railways, as well as a huge overhaul of planning to speed up connecting new projects to the grid and upgrading existing renewables.

Ed Miliband said:
“The lesson we can all take from the impact of conflict in the Middle East is that we need energy and economic security that can withstand this new age of geopolitical instability. Cleaner, greener homegrown power where we can control the supply gives us that security. And that’s what matters to people right now – knowing that whatever happens on the global stage, they have a Labour Government who puts them first and wants to protect their pockets.”

This government’s main focus is on tackling the cost of living and just this month a number of new measures came into force to support families, including:

An average saving of £117 on energy bills
A rise in both the National Minimum and Living Wage – boosting the pay packets of nearly 3 million workers
A £575 boost for millions of pensioners
The scrapping of the two-child limit, lifting half a million children out of poverty
And while there is much more to do, Labour MPs will continue to fight the corner of families in Essex.

Labour MP for Harlow, Chris Vince, said:
“Our Labour Government will always be on your side, stepping in when times are tough. Whether that is immediate solutions like taking money off energy bills and freezing rail fares or making the long-term decisions that will bring costs down for good, we are determined to put more money back in your pocket.

“I am proud to support these new policies that will drive our clean energy mission forward and protect family budgets for years to come.”

However, no mention of new small modular nuclear reactors which the Government is supporting. Made by Rolls Royce with well paid, unionised jobs in Britain. British advanced engineering being given a chance at last. Now we just require numpty Keir Starmer to be deposed so he can't mess it up.

hahahahahahahahahaha he thinks we are fools, green energy outside nuclear is a massive scam. Hundreds of pounds are on everyone's bills due to green energy fixation. David is it non-union engineers which design these things the unions are just a pain and get in the way.

Cut tax, cut uncontrolled spiralling welfare expenditure, start drilling for North Sea oil and gas instead of importing it from the same North Sea fields of Norway! Get rid of Miliband! Labour is doomed!

Adam, AMEC nuclear engineering had a long standing union recognition agreement with unions that merged into the Manufacturing, Scientific and Finance union. This later merged with others into Unite. Likewise, the Electrician's Union merged into EETPU and onto Amicus and then Unite. The electrician's union had recognition agreements in nuclear reactor operations.

Oil represents so much more than energy. It’s in nearly everything that we interact with. What ever the government claims, we all know from their track record that the opposite will happen. So look fwd to higher energy costs, interest at 6% and inflation at 8-10% by this time next year. The only useful thing the gov can do is issue drilling licenses. It’s a no brainer because the oil companies take all the risk and if they find nothing it has not cost us, but if they do we get tax revenues. Small nuclear reactors are a dead end as they do not give a return on investment. This is why only the military use them.

And the remedies for the current oil and gas shortages caused by the wars in the Middle East? Labour (Milliband) can't seem to grasp the importance of security of supplies from the North Sea, where the UK is forced to buy from Norway who are extracting those reserves. Replacing the bizarre policy of hirthing electricity prices to those of oil would also be a help, but still not reduce the price of petrol and diesel.

I wouldn't vote for labour if they were the last party on earth.
