Harlow Green Party thanks voters following district council election results

News / Sat 9th May 2026 at 07:52am

THE Green Party of England and Wales in Harlow would like to thank residents for their support following the 2026 district council elections, after Green candidates stood across the town and secured votes in every ward contested.

The election saw strong Conservative gains across the district, with the Conservatives winning every ward contested and increasing their overall majority on the council.

Green Party candidates received support across Harlow,

Over 2,300 Green Party voters chose not to vote ‘tactically’ but instead stuck to their morals and voted Green and for this we thank you all. This is an encouraging foundation on which we will build, develop and grow.

We fielded 11 candidates across Harlow and I am truly proud of each and every one of them for being brave and taking a stand for their beliefs especially when there were disparaging comments from one party.

Harlow Green Party chair, Jennifer Steadman said:

“We are grateful to everyone who voted Green in this year’s elections and to the volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the campaign both in front and behind the scenes. While these results were challenging, we are proud to have offered residents a positive alternative focused on fairness, sustainability, and community grounded politics of inclusion and hope.

The issues facing Harlow — from the cost of living and pressure on local services to protecting our environment our wildlife and improving housing — remain critically important. We will continue building our presence locally and campaigning for a greener, fairer future for our town.

The Harlow Green Party are committed to continue engaging with residents across the town in the months ahead, focusing on environmental protection, investment in public transport, cleaner neighbourhoods, and action on climate and energy costs. It has been suggested that our campaign was built around just potholes and parking. Whilst these issues are important, the fact that we also worked on garage demolition, river pollution, fire safety, local wildlife, pesticide usage, the planned solar farm and housing seem to have been totally overlooked. As our critics will know, there is only so much room on a leaflet and at least we had information and evidence to share of our work in the community.

The critics and naysayers have been out in force during this election, but we want to reassure our supporters that their comments will not deter us. Our focus remains firmly on the people of Harlow, the issues that matter to residents, and building a positive vision for a greener, fairer future.

We are proud of the respectful and community-focused campaign we ran, and we will continue working constructively for Harlow regardless of the noise surrounding the build up to the election.

Thank you.

I'd like if I may, to add my personal thanks to the residents of Passmores who voted for me last Thursday.

You are all incredibly resilient. Harlow and Essex as a whole are hostile towards new, progressive and liberal politics. Hopefully as the town regeneration continues education improves and wages rise and people will make more informed decisions, based on facts rather than emotions.

I want to say a huge thank you to the 210 residents in Sumners & Kingsmoor who voted for me, and congratulations to the other candidates on their campaigns. I am particularly grateful for the loyalty shown by my voters at a time of widespread tactical voting. As someone who actually lives in the area, I am here for the long haul. I will continue to attend council meetings to ask the tough questions on school safety, hospital funding, and overdevelopment. I am resilient and more determined than ever; one election result doesn’t change my commitment to fighting for the community I call home

Jennifer Steadman is a truly decent person.

Dear Julie Bull, the Forman family that live in your ward didn't vote for you because we didn't get a single leaflet. Nor did we get a knock on the door or see any event in the ward. Plus, you were at the Green Party meeting in The Herald last November where the party's election strategy was explained as Mark Hall ward only partly due to financial issues. Given this evidence, I would say your contribution to this article is of similar evidential quality to Zack Polanski's CV.

Hi David, It's a fair point to raise, we would love to send leaflets to every home in Harlow also we are proud to be funded by our members. We don't have the luxury of millionaires making donations, we raise every penny ourselves. We simply can't afford to have them posted out to everyone and we only have so many hands. There was also short amount of time from the election announcement. For the same reason we have not been able to see people in every ward we must carefully target our work. Last I saw you was the 8th April you may remember my arm in a rather large bandage. These restrictions in no way diminishes our commitment to you to make things better. I usually post my work on social media and believe you already have email contact details from the chair should you have any further concerns. Thank you

Dave Forman- All of my candidates are hardworking individuals who each bring something different to the table in their respective wards. The fact that someone did not receive a leaflet or a knock on their door was not a decision taken by the candidate. It was my decision, based on limited funds and the simple reality that we did not have the time or resources available. As someone who has been involved in politics for some time, I would have thought you, more than anyone, would appreciate that reality. When a multi-millionaire drops a £5 million donation in to our account, we will happily pay for leaflets to be delivered across Harlow and will have enough time available for extensive door-knocking in each ward, until then we will continue to raise our own funds in an open, honest manner as indeed we always have. Thank you for your understanding.

Dear Jennifer, in the run-up to the local election in 2016 just two people delivered 24,000+ Hope not Hate leaflets. That was my wife and I. As of November 2025 Harlow Green Party had 84 members. If they can't contribute money or time to deliver leaflets then their commitment is lacking. By contrast, the Conservative's Clive Souter delivered many leaflets, including one at 6:30am on election day. I would also point out that the Greens scored 205 votes in Sumners and Kingsmoor in 2024 on a turnout of 1909 voters which equates to 10.74%. In this month's election Harlow Greens received just 210 votes with a turnout of 2,537 voters, which equates to 8.28%. This reduction in votes is compounded by a Labour candidate who was obviously standing as a paper candidate. As the Conservatives demonstrated, it is the reiteration of the message and a lot of legwork that wins elections. A Green Strategy of Eco-Conservatism in one ward (Mark Hall) failed miserably. Relying on social media as a way to continue sitting on the sofa doesn't work.

By the way, roughly 3400 leaflets are required to cover the homes in Sumners and Kingsmoor. As you get your leaflets printed at Solopress in Southend like many other parties, I checked out their website. The 5000 A5 printed both sides on 130gsm silk paper with FSC certified mark costs £92.14p. If you had 7500 printed you could have covered two wards at a cost of £128.08p. For 7500 A4 leaflets printed both sides it would cost £273.45. If I had been a member, I would have happily paid for 7500 leaflets.
