Letter to Editor: Former MP Robert Halfon: I respect Chris Vince MP for standing by Keir Starmer

Dear Editor,
It may sound strange coming from a former Conservative MP, but I respect Chris Vince MP for standing strongly by Keir Starmer. Loyalty is an important human virtue.
Reflecting on my own time as an MP, I have learned how damaging it is to change Prime Ministers before a General Election. I understand the immense pressure from constituents, colleagues, and the media to join the “stampeding herd” in condemning a leader. Looking back, I know I would have behaved differently.

While political squabbling continues, our economy is struggling, the cost of living is increasing, and businesses are being damaged by instability. Furthermore, the conflict in Iran is having significant global ramifications. We need political stability, not endless upheaval.
This is not to overlook the Government’s failings; taxes are too high, unemployment is rising, and borrowing has reached an all-time high. The progress made in building an “apprenticeships and skills nation” is at signiificant risk of being undermined.
However, a change of leadership should be decided by the public at a General Election, just as at last week’s local elections, the public decided to give a strong no to Labour.
Yours sincerely
Rt Hon Robert Halfon
Managing Director, Ladder of Opportunity Consulting
I cannot see a General election being called for the simple reasons that, 1 they are guaranteed to lose and 2 they are too busy troughing with the 95k salaries they get, Starmer the most despised person in the UK.
Dear David, I have know you very well over many years. Your comment is beneath you. Not everything is or should be about Israel.
Dear Robert, an accurate observation by me, but granted it was not your only consideration so I stand corrected.
Robert, I think this shows we need not only a new PM but also a new government. The last 14 months have been unlike anything I have ever experienced, a continuation of an arrogant and out of control government. We have a nation in decline from industry to its military, 14 years of conservative rule and now labour have laid bare the lie politicians have a plan. I fail to see one beyond pandering the lunatic fringes so as to not destroy the party (this is both con and labour). The people of the UK deserve better, we have the highest tax burden in the world. Successive government have convinced people £30K is a good salary and £100K is amazing both of these views are wrong and limit us. We should be striving to create jobs and growth people should be wanting to better their position and earn more. Not the old rhetoric of bosses and workers. We should be encouraging and creating conditions for businesses - I know I have created 4 high tech businesses, my latest however is not based in the UK due to its regressive tax regime. It is time for a change, and that change must be total, note I do not thing reform are going to be a solution, but perhaps they are a step along the path to people working out what the solution is. The reality is the UK thinks itself a rich country, and global power it stopped being both a long time ago. But it can be again with the right leadership and vision.
Loyalty is a good thing, that being said however, if it's given to the right people. Those people who he is meant to be representing, his constituents! Certainly not to a prime minister who in every conceivable way has lied and run roughshot over the entire population in every direction. and is willing to sack people for doing their jobs to save his own skin.
@adam. Well said and I totally concurre. Since the pandemic business life has been hugely challenging to say the least. My interest have survived and ultimately thrived but only because of the sacrifices of the shareholders and management team. But at the end of the day the whole problem was caused by our own government. Something in my 40 odd years of experience I would ever have thought that the greatest challenge to my business interests would be my own government. The only conclusion I can draw is that our government is against us. Something that I am sure Rob and his predecessor Bill will find disheartening
