PUPILS from St James C of E Primary School recently enjoyed an exciting day of outdoor learning at Parndon Woods Nature Reserve, taking part in a variety of nature-based activities organised by Plant Pots and Wellies.

The day began with an interactive session exploring how trees work. The children became the different parts of a tree, each taking on an important role. The “roots” enthusiastically guzzled up water, while the “xylem” transported it upwards with a loud “wheee!” The “leaves” then waved their fingers to represent photosynthesis before the phloem returned the water with a dramatic “whoosh!” This fun activity helped bring science to life and gave pupils a greater understanding of how trees survive and grow.
The class then created their own nature journals to record the day’s discoveries. Activities included leaf printing and bark rubbings, allowing the children to observe and capture the natural world around them in creative ways.
Guided by experienced leaders from Plant Pots and Wellies, the pupils followed a trail around the reserve, learning about local wildlife and habitats. Along the way, they were taught simple but important ways to care for and protect local green spaces, helping to inspire a sense of environmental responsibility.
To round off a memorable day, the children used natural materials to make their own woodland wands, decorating twigs and letting their imaginations run free.
The visit provided a wonderful opportunity for pupils to connect with nature, develop their understanding of the environment and enjoy hands-on learning outside the classroom.
Following the visit, school staff shared their appreciation for the experience, saying:
“Thank you for making our trip a lovely day out. The children really enjoyed it! They were all engaged and especially enjoyed the walk through the forest. The frog was a highlight!
Please thank everyone that helped us on the day – you have a lovely team!”
The feedback reflects the positive impact of the day and highlights the enthusiasm shown by both the children and the Plant Pots and Wellies team. Plant Pots and Wellies would like to thank St James C of E Primary School for visiting and a shout out to the lovely Wildspace team who care for the woods and made the visit memorable.
