The importance of spelling was highlighted at Cooks Spinney Primary Academy with all students taking part in the annual Spelling Bee.

Older children in Key Stage 2 took part in class elimination rounds before the winners went head to head on stage during a finals assembly.

The older finalists were handed a microphone and challenged to spell words including “millennium”, “convenience” and “photosynthesis”, as well as giving their meaning and use in a sentence.

The Key Stage 2 winner was Suraj

Matt Grier, enriched curriculum lead, said: “The words children were asked to spell were words I would hope they would already know or be able to use their phonetic skills to work it out. The aim of the Spelling Bee is to promote the importance of spelling.”

Key Stage 1 winner Jack, Year 2, said: “I was super nervous and shocked when they said in assembly that I was the winner. I felt great. My family are so proud of me.”
