Essex Council confirms commitment to supporting unpaid carers

Health / Sun 7th Jun 2026 at 07:12am

ESSEX County Council is celebrating unpaid carers and recognising the incredible contribution they make.

There are an estimated 124,000 unpaid carers across Essex. However, many people do not identify as carers, so the true number may be much higher. Unpaid carers often balance employment, finances, their own wellbeing and their caring commitments.

The 2026 Carers Week (8-14 June) theme is ‘Building Carer Friendly Communities’. This highlights the importance of creating supportive environments where carers are recognised, valued and understood. For many, simply being listened to and acknowledged can make a profound difference.

Councillor Paul Godfrey, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care said: “There are so many amazing people of all ages caring for loved ones in Essex. Being an unpaid carer is rewarding, but it can be challenging too.

“We want to make sure we are doing all we can to help unpaid carers live the best lives they can. We will do this by listening to them, and hearing what they want and need. This will help us make sure they get the best support possible, at the right time,

“We are proud to shine a light on the life changing difference they make, not just this week, but every day of the year.

“To any unpaid carers out there- thank you for all you do.”
