Harlow electricity worker demonstrates staying power with 40 years’ service
A POWER worker from Harlow has had his long service with the industry recognised by employer UK Power Networks.
The company, which delivers electricity for 8.3 million homes and businesses across East Anglia, London and the South East, invites staff who have given 40 years of continuous service to join its 40+ Club.
Stuart Varney started out with Eastern Electricity as an apprentice fitter in 1979 and has been the area manager for the Lea Valley region since 2012.
He was told when he joined four decades ago, that completing an apprenticeship could ultimately lead to a senior role and is delighted that prediction came true for him. He relishes the pressures of the role – even when it means being at the centre of a storm.
Stuart, 56, said: “It doesn’t feel like 40 years as it’s flown by to be honest with you, but that’s the type of business this is, we’re always on the go.
“When I was taken on as an apprentice everyone told us ‘you’re the future managers’ and for me, and a number of others who began apprenticeships in the same era, that has gone on to be the case.
“This is a company where if you start at the bottom there is a clear path for you to reach the top if you work hard and embrace the challenge. As a manager now I look to promote young talent when I see it and provide the same kind of opportunities that were given to me.
“The toughest days in this job are when there are major storms which damage the electricity cables.
“You can easily work long hours, but they’re also the best days in a way as you take satisfaction at helping people and getting their power back on, the adrenaline kicks in and I enjoy that.”
Basil Scarsella, chief executive of UK Power Networks, said: “We like to recognise and celebrate the dedication and expertise of our employees, many of whom have lived and worked in the areas we serve for a long time.
“Their work keeping the lights on is usually carried out behind the scenes, but it is very valuable in helping everyday lives run smoothly and contributing to the success of local economies.”
The company which keeps the lights on for more than 18million people, has over 400 employees with over 40 years’ service and holds an annual event for those who reach the milestone.
Wow! Stuart Varney! A name from my distant past. In a galaxy far, far, away, and in a previous life, I worked with Stuart at the Carterhatch Lane depot more than 30 years ago. A name I remember all this time because he was a really nice guy to work with back then, very easy going, always a pleasure to work with. After all this time it's great to see he has done so well! Congrats Stuart on 40 years, and it's great to see you doing so well in your career. I wonder if he remembers Ron F. and his quest for parts for vintage motor bikes? There were some real characters back then.
